WBB: Rams Fall in Final Minute to Flying Queens

PLAINVIEW, Texas — Texas Wesleyan University (6-5, 2-3) fell to Wayland Baptist University (3-6, 3-2), 58-55, despite holding a 15-point lead in the first quarter.

The Rams began the game with a strong offensive performance, highlighted by Peyton Foster's early contributions. Foster opened the scoring with a three-pointer at 9:42, assisted by Sophia Hurtado, and continued to lead the charge with two more three-pointers, contributing significantly to the team's 15-point lead. Despite the Flying Queens' attempts to close the gap, the Rams maintained control, ending the quarter with a 20–8 advantage.

The Rams extended their largest lead to 15 points midway through the second quarter, highlighted by Nala Richardson's layup at 5:27. Although Wayland Baptist managed to close the gap with a series of free throws and a three-pointer, the Rams maintained control with strong defensive rebounds and a key three-pointer by Jenae Moore at 2:37. The period ended with the Rams holding a 35–25 lead.

Texas Wesleyan maintained its lead in the third quarter, holding off a late push from the Flying Queens. The quarter saw the Rams extend its advantage to 10 points early, but the Flying Queens responded with a series of scores to narrow the gap. Richardson's key layup at 3:38 helped the Rams stay ahead as they converted free throws down the stretch. Despite a late three-pointer by Bella Dabbs at the buzzer, Texas Wesleyan ended the period with a slim 44–42 lead over Wayland Baptist.

Texas Wesleyan began the fourth quarter by establishing a five-point lead, highlighted by a key layup from Kennedy Holmes at 9:02, pushing the score to 46-44. The Flying Queens responded with a layup at 8:09 to tie the game, but Kayla Fuller regained the lead for the Rams with a three-pointer at 6:06, assisted by Richardson, making it 51-48. 

Despite Texas Wesleyan's efforts to maintain their advantage, Wayland Baptist closed the gap and eventually took the lead with a layup at 0:15 by Dabbs. The quarter ended with a late surge from Wayland Baptist, resulting in a 58-55 defeat for the Rams as the game concluded.

Foster scored 18 points, including four 3-pointers, and collected four rebounds. Kameryn Phillips tallied 10 points, converting six of nine free throws. Richardson recorded nine points and added three assists while making two steals. Iasia Goldman contributed defensively with two blocks and three rebounds.

The Rams return home next week as they take on the Oklahoma City Stars on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 6pm in the Sid Richardson Center.
