McPHERSON – Texas Wesleyan University (19-9, 14-9 SAC) staged a dramatic second-half comeback to edge Central Christian College (16-12, 12-12 SAC) on Saturday 68-66.
The Rams overcame a 12-point halftime deficit to secure the road victory.
Central Christian controlled the first half, shooting 52% from the field and hitting seven of 11 three-pointers. The Tigers capitalized on Texas Wesleyan's early turnovers and missed opportunities, leading 37-25 at the break. Jevarrick Butler paced CCCK with 17 points, while Chris Whitten added 15.
Texas Wesleyan responded in the second half with a more aggressive attack. Richard Amaefule led the charge with 15 points and nine rebounds, dominating the paint and converting seven of eight free throws. Montez Young Jr. and Trey Sinegal each contributed 12 points, while Vegas Evans added 13 off the bench.
The Rams steadily chipped away at the deficit, using defensive pressure to force turnovers and limit CCCK's shooting efficiency. Sinegal's three-pointer at the 17:20 mark pulled Texas Wesleyan within five, and a layup from Matt Nero at 12:09 gave the Rams their first lead at 46-45.
With the game tied at 59-59 in the final minutes, Amaefule and Evans delivered key baskets to put Texas Wesleyan ahead. Nero's layup with 1:05 remaining extended the lead to 64-59. Despite CCCK's late free throws, the Rams maintained their composure and closed out the win.
Texas Wesleyan finished the game shooting 43.3% from the field and dominated inside with 40 points in the paint. They also won the rebounding battle 33-28 and forced 17 turnovers, converting them into 19 points.
The Rams now sit and wait for the brackets to be released on Monday night to see who they will play in the quarterfinals of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament.
