FORT WORTH – Texas Wesleyan University (25-14) held off a ninth-inning rally to secure a 5-4 win over Our Lady of the Lake University (19-17) on Tuesday at Sycamore Park.
The Rams (25-14) built a 5-0 lead behind strong pitching from Noah Huerta, who earned the win after tossing seven scoreless innings while allowing just three hits and striking out one. Seth Wright recorded the save, working the final two outs after a four-run ninth by the Saints (19-17).
Texas Wesleyan scored in the third inning when Ryan Flores singled to third base, bringing home Brendon Vela for a 1-0 lead. The Rams added to their advantage in the sixth, highlighted by Ryan Kramer's two-run homer to left that plated Flores. Idelfonso Garcia later doubled to center, scoring Tim Escamilla to make it 4-0.
Brandon Rincones extended the lead in the eighth, driving in Mac Morelan on a sacrifice groundout.
Our Lady of the Lake nearly completed a comeback in the ninth. The Saints loaded the bases before Christian Delgado and Jack Kalisky delivered RBI singles. A bases-loaded walk and a fielder's choice brought two more runs across, cutting the deficit to one. Wright then forced a groundout to end the game.
Kalisky (0-1) took the loss, allowing one run on one hit in the eighth. Offensively, the Saints were led by Criztain Martinez, who went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Texas Wesleyan finished with nine hits, led by Flores, who went 2-for-2 with an RBI and two walks. The Rams also swiped four bases in the win.
The Rams return to action this weekend with a series against Mid-America Christian University in Oklahoma City.
