VB: Rams Leave San Antonio with a Win

SAN ANTONIO, TX – Texas Wesleyan University (1-2) finished the Halo Classic with a matchup with the tournament hosts Our Lady of the Lake University (2-2). The Rams were victorious in a five-set thriller with a final score of 3-2.

The first set saw the Rams dominate with a barrage of kills from just about everyone on the team that ended up overwhelming the Saints. The Rams capitalized on the Saints' errors to win the set in dominant fashion with a score of 25-15. Hanna Rubis led the team with three kills in the set, with several other Rams contributing two as well.

The second set was an even keel match with both teams locked in at 11 apiece but quickly turned around with the Saints winning nine of the next eleven points to go out to a 20-13 lead. The Saints then carried that momentum and followed up with two kills to end the set with a score of 25-17, tying the match to one set apiece.

The third set was one of swings, neither team rarely won just one point at a time. The Rams and Saints would trade blows as one team would win four points, the next five, and the next two. The Saints found themselves having a four-point swing late in the set to go to set point with a score of 24-16. Vanya Palmeros got things started for a Rams comeback with a kill, then followed they followed that up with a service ace from Lillian Breaux, then another kill from Rubis, and a hitting error from the Saints. Unfortunately, that's where the comeback ended as the Saints won the final point of the set, winning 25-20 and taking the lead two sets to one.

Down by one set, the Rams needed to win to keep the match going and to get their first win on the season. The Rams got out to an early 10-6 lead, but the Saints answered with a three-point swing to bring it within one. The Rams and Saints kept pace with each other once again and eventually the Saints found themselves up 22-21 late in the set. The Rams, with the game on line, capitalized on the opportunity and won four points in a row to win the set 25-22.

Going into the fifth and final set, both teams looked to start fast and gain an early lead in the race to 15. The Rams struck first, getting out to an early 3-0 lead, but then found themselves tied once again at 9-9. With the game only points away from ending, the Rams won six of the next ten points to win the final set 15-13. Lyric Biggiers had the final kill to secure the Rams first win of the season.

Rubis led the team in kills with 14, with Migdaly Bernal and Biggiers each contributing 12. Ruby Rumohr led the team with 24 assists and Neeley Rutledge aided some great defense with 18 digs.

The Rams leave the Halo Classic with a record of 1-2 and will have two weeks of preparation before the Texas Two Step tournament in Fort Worth and Waxahachie. The Rams will host one of the sites and will face off with Kansas Wesleyan and Evangel on August 29.
