WBB: Rams Dominate John Brown with 22 Points Off Turnovers

FORT WORTH, Texas — Texas Wesleyan University (7-8, 3-6 SAC) defeated John Brown University (5-10, 3-6 SAC), 70-50, at the Sid Richardson Center, with the Rams securing a decisive 22 points off turnovers.

Texas Wesleyan began the first quarter by establishing control through effective scoring in the paint and capitalizing on turnovers. Kameryn Phillips contributed early by tying the game with two free throws at 8:34, and then added two more to give the Rams the lead. The home team maintained momentum with an 8–2 run, highlighted by a 3-pointer from Nala Richardson at 6:03. Defensively, the Rams disrupted Golden Eagles' rhythm, forcing 12 turnovers and securing five steals. Sophia Hurtado's layup at 2:36 pushed the lead to 11 points, the largest of the period. John Brown managed to close the gap slightly with a late 3-pointer by Oaklee Lofton, but the Rams ended the quarter ahead, 20–14.

Texas Wesleyan began the second quarter by capitalizing on turnovers, with Richardson's steal leading to a fast-break layup early on. The home team continued to apply pressure defensively, forcing six turnovers from the Golden Eagles and converting these opportunities into seven points off turnovers. On the offensive end, the Rams controlled the paint, scoring 10 points inside while also receiving a significant contribution from the bench, adding 10 points. Peyton Foster and Iasia Goldman were key performers in this stretch, contributing to an offensive surge that extended the lead. The quarter concluded with the Rams leading 38–22.

Texas Wesleyan began the third quarter by extending their lead with key defensive plays, including three blocks and three steals. Phillips and Richardson contributed with points in the paint, while Goldman added two free throws at 4:22 to maintain momentum. Kennedy Holmes and Foster each connected on a jumper and a 3-pointer, respectively, widening the lead. Texas Wesleyan maintained their substantial lead in the fourth quarter, despite a scoring push from John Brown. Early on, Hurtado's free throws extended the lead to 23 points at 9:22. Sanford and Phillips added to the team's inside scoring by converting layups, allowing the Rams to control the paint with 12 points. John Brown attempted a comeback with successful three-pointers and free throws, narrowing the gap slightly. However, Texas Wesleyan's consistent scoring and defense, including a key steal by Jenae Moore with 31 seconds left, ensured there was no significant shift in momentum. The quarter ended with the Rams securing a decisive victory, closing the game with a 70-50 score.

Phillips led the scoring with 15 points, converting 7 of 9 free throws. Richardson added 10 points and recorded two steals. Holmes contributed four rebounds and three steals. Hurtado posted seven points and two blocks.

The Rams continue their home stretch as they take on in-state rival Nelson University on Monday, January 12 at 6pm inside the Sid Richardson Center.
