WBB: Rams Overcome Deficit for Key Conference Win Over Evangels

FORT WORTH, Texas — Texas Wesleyan University (8-10, 4-8 SAC) secured a 58-49 victory over Mid-America Christian University (13-4, 8-3 SAC) at the Sid Richardson Center, overcoming a 10-point deficit in the second quarter. The Rams capitalized on turnovers, converting 17 points from the Evangels' 19 turnovers to aid in their win.

Texas Wesleyan began the first quarter with a brief lead following two successful free throws by Aniyah Sanford at 8:46. The team managed to tie the score at 4-4 after a jumper from Kyla Speights at 7:06. However, the Evangels responded by capitalizing on opportunities in the paint, gradually extending their advantage. Despite a layup by Kameryn Phillips, assisted by Kennedy Holmes, to bring the score to 8-7 at 4:35, Texas Wesleyan struggled to prevent a scoring run. Mid-America Christian widened the gap with a three-pointer at 1:51, leading by seven points. The quarter ended with Texas Wesleyan trailing 14-7.

Texas Wesleyan opened the second quarter trailing and faced an early challenge as the Evangels extended their lead to 12 points. Sincere Roberts scored a layup at 9:21, marking the largest lead for the visitors. However, Texas Wesleyan responded with a series of defensive stops and turnovers, highlighted by Kennedy Holmes and Kameryn Phillips' steals, which fueled a comeback. Aniyah Sanford sparked the offensive momentum, scoring a three-pointer at 5:37, which was part of a 9-point surge off turnovers. Jenae Moore's three-pointer at 4:50 and Kameryn Phillips' layup tied the score at 19-19. Sanford added a free throw to push the team ahead briefly. Despite the Evangels regaining a narrow lead, Phillips closed the quarter with a fast-break layup, narrowing the deficit to one point. The quarter concluded with Texas Wesleyan trailing 23-22.

Texas Wesleyan began the third quarter with a strong offensive push, initiated by a three-pointer from Sanford at 9:39, assisted by Moore. The home team capitalized on turnovers, with Phillips securing a steal that led to an early scoring opportunity. The team maintained momentum with a layup from Phillips at 8:23, pushing the lead to four points. Midway through the quarter, Texas Wesleyan extended its lead with a series of successful three-point plays. Peyton Foster and Speights each converted from beyond the arc, with assists coming from Sophia Hurtado and Nala Richardson, respectively. The home team achieved its largest lead of the game at 8 points with 4:54 remaining. Texas Wesleyan closed the third quarter effectively, outscoring Mid-America Christian 18-9. The home team's defense held strong, allowing only three field goals from the visitors. With a balanced effort on both ends of the court, Texas Wesleyan led 40-32 heading into the final quarter.

Texas Wesleyan secured their lead in the fourth quarter with effective free-throw shooting and crucial defensive stops. Alaina Hill converted a layup and a free throw to extend the home team's lead early in the quarter. Phillips added four critical free throws in the middle of the quarter, keeping the Rams ahead. Sanford hit a key three-pointer at 1:31, pushing the lead further as time dwindled. Hurtado and Foster added late free throws to seal the outcome. Despite the Evangels' effort to close the gap, including a three-pointer by Taliah Lee, Texas Wesleyan ended the quarter on a 10-point lead, finishing with a score of 58–49.

Sanford led the team with 16 points, connecting on three 3-pointers, and added two steals. Phillips scored 15 points while securing eight rebounds and making five free throws. Foster contributed with nine points and gathered five rebounds. Hill collected nine rebounds and added six points to the team's effort.

The Rams go on the road next week as they travel to Siloam Springs, AR to take on John Brown University on Thursday, January 22 at 6pm.
