FB: Turnover Frenzy Falls in Favor of Crusaders

FORT WORTH, Texas — Texas Wesleyan (2-4) lost to University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (5-1) 38-22 on Saturday. Texas Wesleyan threw for 328 yards and held possession for 41:52, but also committed four interceptions in the loss.

On the opening kickoff, Texas Wesleyan turned the return into the first quarter's only points, as Jakharyn Parks forced a fumble and Evenn Head recovered at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor 29 before Charlie Adamoli hit Darren White for a 28-yard touchdown at 11:48. Christian Munguia added the extra point, and the Texas Wesleyan defense answered the next threat when Head intercepted Carson Horton at the TXWES 20 after University of Mary Hardin-Baylor had moved inside the 25. After a Texas Wesleyan punt, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor again reached the TXWES 21, but Jemari Seals hurried a third-down incompletion and the ensuing 38-yard field goal attempt missed short. Texas Wesleyan closed the quarter with another drive into visitor territory, recovering its own fumble after a sack before Maurice Griffin broke a 27-yard run and Adamoli found White for 7 yards to help keep the possession moving with Texas Wesleyan ahead 7-0.

In the second quarter, Texas Wesleyan was held scoreless while University of Mary Hardin-Baylor scored 17 points, ending the half with Texas Wesleyan down 17-7. Earlier, Texas Wesleyan opened the quarter in University of Mary Hardin-Baylor territory and reached the UMHB26 behind Adamoli completions to Darren White and Makhi Whitney, but the drive ended on a fourth-and-1 loss. The defense answered with a stop after breakups by Jace Hill-Douglas and Head, but University of Mary Hardin-Baylor later drove from the TXWES47 for a touchdown at 8:12. Texas Wesleyan's next possession produced its longest advance of the quarter, including Maurice Griffin's 8-yard run and Adamoli's 25-yard completion to Whitney, before a holding penalty helped stall the drive near midfield. After a late interception gave University of Mary Hardin-Baylor the ball at the TXWES35, Ryan Seymour's tackle for loss helped limit the possession to a 39-yard field goal with 12 seconds left, setting the halftime score at 17-7.

In the third quarter, Texas Wesleyan's main response was a 15-play, 65-yard drive that ended with Charlie Adamoli's 17-yard touchdown pass to Courtlyon Jackson and a two-point pass to Darren White, making it 31-15 with 4:12 left. Earlier, Texas Wesleyan absorbed two interception returns for touchdowns by Scooby Carter, including one on the first offensive snap of the half, and also lost a fumble on its next possession. The defense limited the damage after that fumble, pushing University of Mary Hardin-Baylor backward on a three-play series before a punt. After the touchdown drive, Hill-Douglas made three tackles on the next defensive series to help force another punt, and Texas Wesleyan moved back across midfield late behind Adamoli completions to Whitney and Jackson.

In the fourth quarter, Texas Wesleyan's main response came after University of Mary Hardin-Baylor's punt-return touchdown, as Adamoli led a scoring march and hit Sean Smith for a 44-yard touchdown at 7:32 before Christian Munguia's extra point made it 38-22. Earlier, Texas Wesleyan opened the quarter in UMHB territory but stalled, and its defense answered with Seals making a tackle for loss before two incompletions forced a punt. On the scoring possession, Texas Wesleyan overcame an interception when Okeoghene Akpoborie forced a fumble on the return and Lamar Brown recovered, allowing the offense to continue the drive with completions to Darren White, Whitney, Courtlyon Jackson and Smith. After UMHB recovered the ensuing onside kick and reached the Texas Wesleyan 5, Seals dropped Jet Hayes for a 3-yard loss and Micario Brackens intercepted Carson Horton at the goal line for a touchback with 4:41 left. Texas Wesleyan later moved to the UMHB31 before turning it over on downs, then forced a late punt and had one final possession end on downs as the game finished 38-22.

Adamoli completed 30 of 55 passes for 317 yards and three touchdowns and added 38 rushing yards. Courtlyon Jackson caught 11 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown. Darren White added six receptions for 71 yards and a touchdown and caught a two-point conversion. Head recorded three tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery.

Scooby Carter intercepted two passes and returned both for touchdowns, totaling 50 return yards, and added three tackles. BJ Stewart scored on one of his two receptions and added a 35-yard punt return touchdown. Carson Horton completed 16 of 32 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns. Joey Johnson recorded 14 tackles and added an interception.
