WBB: Rams Playoff Chances Dwindle with Loss to Evangels

OKLAHOMA CITY — Texas Wesleyan (11-15, 7-13 SAC) fell to Mid-America Christian (20-6, 15-5 SAC), 70-45, at the Gaulke Activity Center. The Rams led by six points in the second quarter but were unable to hold off the Evangels' 27-point surge in the fourth.

Texas Wesleyan opened the game strongly, with Kennedy Holmes contributing early by assisting Sophia Hurtado's layup at 8:44 and scoring a jumper at 7:27 to keep the score close. The team's effectiveness in the paint was evident, scoring 10 points from inside, which helped them recover after Mid-America Christian established a seven-point lead at 3:55. Texas Wesleyan closed the quarter with a three-pointer by Hurtado, assisted by Nala Richardson at 1:24, reducing the margin to one. The first quarter ended with the Evangels leading 19–16.

The Rams seized early momentum in the second quarter with Richardson's jumper at 9:32, which initiated a brief lead for the visitors. They extended their advantage to six points, the largest of the quarter, following a pair of free throws by Kyla Speights at 2:50. However, Mid-America Christian responded late, regaining control with a 3-pointer on a fast break by Monique Carter as the clock expired, closing the quarter with a 33-28 lead.

Texas Wesleyan found momentum in the third quarter through a pair of key 3-pointers by Jenae Moore, narrowing the gap to six points at the 3:07 mark. Kameryn Phillips contributed by making four free throws, maintaining offensive pressure. However, the Evangels capitalized on scoring in the paint and fast breaks, extending their lead to as much as 14 points late in the quarter. The third quarter concluded with Mid-America Christian leading 53-43.

The Evangels' strong defensive play limited the Rams' scoring opportunities in the fourth quarter, as the Rams managed just one field goal. Despite a concentrated effort on the boards, securing 15 rebounds, Texas Wesleyan struggled with shooting accuracy, converting only 1 of 20 attempts from the field. Mid-America Christian capitalized on turnovers and a robust offense, extending their lead with multiple three-pointers and layups. The game concluded with Mid-America Christian securing a decisive victory, 70-45.

Phillips led Texas Wesleyan with 14 points, including converting 8 of 9 free throws, and collected 11 rebounds. Holmes added 7 points, making all three of her field goal attempts while pulling down three rebounds. Hurtado contributed 8 points, hitting two 3-pointers and securing four rebounds. Moore scored 6 points, connecting on two 3-pointers and grabbing three rebounds.

The Rams continue their road stretch to finish the season as they travel to Langston, OK to take on Langston University on Thursday, February 19, at 6pm.
