MCPHERSON — Texas Wesleyan University (19-8, 15-7 SAC) secured an 85-77 victory over Central Christian (11-17, 6-16 SAC) on Saturday. The Rams capitalized on their strong first half, outscoring the Tigers 41-48, to maintain the lead throughout the game.
Texas Wesleyan opened the game with a strong performance, taking an early lead over Central Christian. The visitors were effective inside, scoring 12 points in the paint and converting all seven free throw attempts.
DaeVeon Scott contributed significantly, scoring seven points, including a 3-pointer with 2:19 remaining. Central Christian kept the contest close with Chris Whitten's two free throws at the 0:07 mark, narrowing the deficit to five. However, the Rams secured the first half advantage with Jr. Montez Young's buzzer-beating layup, closing the half at 28-21.
In the second half, Texas Wesleyan took control early with
Daniel Oravbiere scoring three consecutive baskets, expanding its lead to 34-23 by the 18:25 mark. The Tigers countered with a 3-pointer from Andre Cooper, narrowing the deficit to 34-29. The Rams then capitalized on a series of turnovers by Central Christian, pushing the score to 48-41 with Scott's 3-pointer at 10:57. Despite a late tying effort by Whitten, who scored a critical basket with 26 seconds remaining, the game concluded in a 69-69 tie.
Scott scored 16 points, including three 3-pointers, and added three assists.
Matt Nero contributed 18 points, converting all eight of his free throw attempts. Oravbiere posted 18 points, hitting 8 of 10 from the field, and collected eight rebounds. Young recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds while also making three steals.
