FORT WORTH — Texas Wesleyan University (8-1) secured a decisive 6-2 victory over William Woods University (1-2) on Sunday at Sycamore Park. Texas Wesleyan's offense was highlighted by a home run among their 11 hits, while the pitching staff held William Woods to just three hits over nine innings.
Texas Wesleyan started strong in the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead. E. Jaquez was hit by a pitch and later scored on a throwing error during a double steal with B. Vela. Vela then scored on a single by J. Herrera. William Woods was held scoreless through the first three innings by effective pitching and defense from Texas Wesleyan.
Texas Wesleyan extended their lead in the fourth inning with a solo home run by
Giuseppe Buttaci, making it 3-0. In the sixth inning, they added two more runs.
Logan Silvertooth doubled and was replaced by pinch runner
Idelfonso Garcia, who eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by
Jose Rangel. Buttaci also scored on a sacrifice fly by
Jack Erickson, pushing the lead to 5-0.
William Woods got on the board in the seventh inning with an unearned run. Ben Kern scored on a fielder's choice, narrowing the gap to 5-1. Texas Wesleyan responded in the eighth with a sacrifice fly by Rangel, bringing in Buttaci and extending the lead to 6-1.
In the eighth inning, William Woods added another run. Kaden Kinsler scored on a groundout, bringing the score to 6-2. Texas Wesleyan's pitching closed out the ninth inning without allowing any further scoring, securing a 6-2 victory over the Owls.
Jose Casado pitched 4 innings for Texas Wesleyan, allowing just 1 hit and no earned runs while striking out 5 batters. Casado issued 5 walks but managed to keep the Owls scoreless, throwing 72 pitches with 43 strikes.
Dylan Krause contributed 3 innings of relief, giving up 1 run on no hits, striking out 2 and walking 4, while maintaining a WHIP of 1.33.
Alfredo Martinez and
Luka Zakman combined for 1 2/3 innings, with Martinez allowing 1 earned run on 1 hit and 2 walks, while Zakman allowed 1 hit and 1 walk.
Michael Stewart closed out the game, recording 1 out with just 1 pitch.
Rangel contributed significantly with two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs. Jaquez showed speed on the base paths, scoring once and stealing two bases. Vela added to the team's offense with a double and two stolen bases, while also drawing a walk. Buttaci had an impactful performance, going three-for-four at the plate with a home run, driving in one run, and scoring three times.
The Rams return to action at Sycamore Park on Friday against Park University (AZ) in a double header with first pitch scheduled for noon.
