WAXAHACHIE, Texas — Texas Wesleyan University (26-21) secured back-to-back victories over Nelson University (17-31) on Friday, both games concluding with a score of 5–1. The Rams showcased strong offensive efforts in both contests, combining for eleven hits across the two games and effectively limiting Nelson to just two runs over fourteen innings.
In the first game, Texas Wesleyan opened the scoring in the first inning when
Christina Jackson grounded out to the pitcher, allowing
Haylie Delarosa, who had doubled earlier, to score, giving the Rams a 1–0 lead. The pivotal moment came in the fifth inning, as Delarosa singled and scored on a double by
Rachet Houston. Jackson's single advanced Houston to third, setting the stage for
Kylie Barnes, who doubled to bring both runners home. The three-run inning pushed Texas Wesleyan's lead to 4–0. Nelson managed to narrow the gap in the sixth inning when Trista Ford doubled to score Elena Mendez, making it 4–1. The Rams added an insurance run in the seventh when Houston walked, stole second, and advanced to third on a single by Jackson. Barnes grounded out, allowing Houston to score and concluding the game at 5–1.
In the second game, Texas Wesleyan again showcased their offensive strength, combining for six hits, including one home run, while limiting Nelson to just four hits and one earned run. Key plays highlighted the middle innings, particularly the fourth through sixth.
Payton Blanco walked and advanced on a wild pitch in the fourth, and after a sacrifice fly from Barnes,
Ally Hinojosa drove in Blanco with a single, tying the game at 1–1. In the fifth,
Kadynce Crenshaw was hit by a pitch and advanced to third; Blanco singled, followed by Barnes' single that brought Crenshaw home. An error allowed Blanco to score, giving the Rams a 3–1 lead. The sixth inning saw
Mattee Fry hit by a pitch, followed by
Haylie Delarosa's two-run homer, extending the lead to 5–1. Texas Wesleyan's defense held firm for the remainder of the game.
Kylie Barnes pitched a complete game in the first matchup, allowing just one earned run on four hits with three strikeouts, while
Reagan Avants mirrored this effort in the second game, also pitching a complete game and allowing one earned run on seven hits with three strikeouts. Avants issued no walks and maintained control throughout, throwing 95 pitches, 59 for strikes.
Delarosa stood out offensively across both games, recording four hits, including a home run and a double, and scoring four runs. Barnes also made a significant impact with three RBIs and a double in the second game.
Rachet Houston contributed two runs and one RBI in the second game, while
Payton Blanco scored two runs and drew a walk in the first game.
The Rams return to action tomorrow against the Lions with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 25 to conclude their regular season.
