KANSAS CITY — Texas Wesleyan's Haroon Aslam fired back-to-back 70s to open the Roadrunner Invitational, then won the tournament on the 19th hole of the final round to claim NAIA Men's Golfer of the Week honors.
Aslam, a senior, posted a 2-under-par 70 in each of the first two rounds at The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Ga. He eagled the par-5 15th and added birdies on Nos. 18, 1 and 4 to reach 5 under through 10 holes in the first round before closing with a birdie on No. 12. In the second round, he made a birdie on No. 2 and three more in his final eight holes for a 4-under total through 36 holes.
In the final round, Aslam opened with birdies on Nos. 1 and 2 and was even par through 13 holes before a double bogey on No. 14. He responded with birdies on Nos. 15 and 18 — both of which had played well for him all week — and won the playoff on the 55th hole of the tournament with a par.
Texas Wesleyan placed third, eight shots behind Oklahoma City and 12 behind champion and host Dalton State. The Rams will close the regular season by hosting the Texas Wesleyan Spring Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at Squaw Creek Golf Course in Willow Park, Texas.
