LINCOLN — Texas Wesleyan University (41-11) fell to Madonna University (42-14) with a final score of 6–1 on Monday at Sherman Field.
The Rams managed a solo home run in the seventh inning but were unable to overcome the Crusaders' 12 hits and six runs.
Texas Wesleyan faced off against Madonna in a close game, losing 6–1.
The scoring opened in the fourth inning when Madonna's Kevin Davis singled and eventually scored on a Brett Reed hit, putting the visitors ahead 1–0. By the end of the fourth inning, Madonna led 1–0.
In the fifth inning, a sacrifice fly by Donovan Thompson brought home Aamir Mitchell, extending Madonna's lead to 2–0.
Madonna added to its advantage in the sixth inning. Gus Simon doubled and scored on a single by Logan Ellis. Later, Ty Stepek hit a double to bring in two more runs, giving Madonna a 5–0 lead after six innings.
Texas Wesleyan responded in the seventh inning when Gabriel Supelveda hit a solo home run to put the home team on the board. Madonna, however, had already added a run in the top half of the inning with a Kevin Davis home run, making the score 6–1.
The game concluded with no more runs scored, resulting in a final score of 6–1 in favor of Madonna.
Michael Pelosi pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits while striking out five and walking one. He threw 101 pitches, 70 of which were strikes, before recording a loss, bringing his season record to 7-3. Ty Sansom entered in relief, pitching 1/3 inning, giving up one earned run on one hit and one walk, with one strikeout.
Luka Zakman finished the game by pitching 3 1/3 innings, surrendering one earned run on three hits, including one home run, while striking out three.
"The ball didn't fall our way. We hit many balls hard but weren't able to get them to fall. Sometimes that's how baseball works," Texas Wesleyan University head coach Bobby Garza said. "Pelosi threw the ball really well and he gave us a chance
The Rams hope to keep their World Series hopes alive tomorrow when they play against the No. 4-seeded Oakland City Unativersity at Sherman Field, with first pitch scheduled for noon CT on the Urban Edge Network.
