FORT WORTH - It is with great sadness that we inform you Coach Bobby Cornett, a 1972 Texas Wesleyan graduate and beloved member of our campus community, passed away on August 14, 2026, at age 75, following a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
"Coach lived his life in service to others. Relationships and friendships were what mattered. His legacy at Texas Wesleyan was immeasurable—he was a true legend," said Kevin Millikan, longtime friend, coach and colleague.
Coach Cornett's connection to Texas Wesleyan began when he was a student—recruited by Coach O.D. Bounds, Cornett led the Rams to four Big State Conference Championships and an NAIA National Championship in 1969. In 1972, he was named an NAIA All-American and Big State Conference individual medalist. As a professional, Cornett won several tournaments, reached the finals of PGA Tour School five times and Senior PGA Tour School twice. In 1983, he returned to Texas Wesleyan as assistant golf coach before becoming head coach in 1985. Over the next 14 seasons, he led the Rams to 63 tournament wins, including three national championships.
Beginning in 1999, Cornett served 10 seasons as an assistant coach while focusing on the National Senior Tour and Senior PGA Tour before returning as head coach prior to the 2009-10 season. Over the next 10 years, he won 27 tournaments, including a fourth national championship and earning his fourth NAIA National Coach of the Year award in 2019. After his historic 2019 season, he returned to the role of assistant coach. Cornett is a member of the Texas Wesleyan Athletic Hall of Fame, the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame and the NAIA Hall of Fame.
"It's an extremely sad day for all of us who knew Bobby. He leaves behind an unparalleled legacy at Texas Wesleyan—one built on loyalty and a deep commitment to the student-athletes and university he loved. Beyond his remarkable impact on our golf program and this University, he was a friend whose wisdom and support meant a great deal to me personally. His impact will be felt for generations," said Ricky Dotson, athletic director.
