FORT WORTH — Texas Wesleyan University (1-2, 1-0 SAC) defeated Texas College (0-3, 0-2 SAC) 56-20 on Saturday. Texas Wesleyan scored 35 points in the first quarter and held Texas College to 127 yards of total offense.
Early field position and takeaways became five first-quarter touchdowns as Texas Wesleyan reached the end of the quarter with a 35-7 lead. After
Ryan Seymour blocked a Texas College punt,
Ian Jernagin finished a short drive with a 13-yard touchdown run at 13:15, and
Micario Brackens followed on the next series with a 24-yard interception return for a touchdown. The offense added a 51-yard drive capped by Jernagin's 3-yard score, then went 49 yards in four plays with
Charlie Adamoli hitting
Darren White for a 23-yard touchdown. Texas College answered with Christopher Brown's 85-yard kickoff return, but Texas Wesleyan recovered the ensuing onside kick and responded with Adamoli's 17-yard touchdown pass to
Courtlyon Jackson at 2:49. Late in the quarter, Seymour forced a fumble that
John Rector recovered, and Jernagin's 24-yard run moved Texas Wesleyan back into the red zone before the quarter closed.
In the second quarter, Texas Wesleyan added two touchdowns and took a 49-13 lead into halftime, answering Texas College's lone score of the quarter with an 85-yard scoring drive in the final 3:41. Earlier, Adamoli converted third-and-14 with a 16-yard completion to
Ronnie Schneider, and Jernagin finished the short-field possession with a 7-yard touchdown run before
Christian Munguia's kick made it 42-7. The defense then stopped Texas College on fourth-and-2 after
Danny Washington hurried an incomplete pass, but a later Texas Wesleyan interception gave the visitors another possession that ended with Abu Kamara's 1-yard touchdown run at 3:48, trimming the margin to 42-13 after a missed kick. Texas Wesleyan responded from its own 15, getting a third-down completion from Adamoli to Schneider, a 14-yard Adamoli run, a Texas College pass-interference penalty and a 16-yard completion to TJ Curtis before Adamoli found Curtis again for a 35-yard touchdown with 49 seconds left. Max Luna's touchback, Texas Wesleyan held Texas College to eight yards over the final two plays to close the second quarter.
Texas Wesleyan's main response in the third quarter was a 75-yard, seven-play scoring drive that ended with
Maurice Griffin's 8-yard touchdown run at 5:43 and Munguia's PAT. Earlier,
Landrew Ward returned the opening kickoff 44 yards, but a holding penalty pushed Texas Wesleyan back, and Adamoli lost a fumble at the Texas Wesleyan 15 before Texas College turned the short field into a touchdown. After Texas Wesleyan's next series ended in a punt, the defense forced a three-and-out from the Texas Wesleyan 46 as
Brodan Lewis hurried an incompletion,
Izack Villasenor made a no-gain stop and then sacked Jason Wheelock on third down. The scoring march featured Griffin gains of 15 and 4 yards, Adamoli completions to Griffin for 23 yards and Makhi Whitney for 6, and Jernagin's 17-yard run to the Texas College 8, while Seymour's later third-down sack helped Texas Wesleyan get the ball back before the quarter ended with the scoreboard showing Texas Wesleyan ahead 56-20.
The fourth quarter was scoreless, with Texas Wesleyan holding Texas College off the board on each possession. After
Max Luna's 45-yard punt, the defense forced a three-and-out with
Darion Brown and Seymour making stops. Texas Wesleyan's next possession had a 55-yard Adamoli-to-
Darren White touchdown erased by an ineligible-man-downfield penalty, but Adamoli later hit TJ Curtis for 25 yards on third-and-18 and two Texas College penalties helped move the ball to the 14 before Schneider fumbled at the 5. The defense answered with another stop that included tackles for loss involving
Taylor Miller, Frankie Ward-Long and Seymour, and Treven Tuerner broke up a pass before
Cole Francis and
Adarius Williams helped move the offense into Texas College territory.
Darion Brown and Ward-Long added tackles for loss on Texas College's final series as Texas Wesleyan finished a 56-20 win.
Adamoli completed 17 of 29 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns. Jernagin carried 13 times for 88 yards and three touchdowns. TJ Curtis caught four passes for 80 yards and a touchdown. Brackens recorded four tackles and returned an interception 24 yards for a touchdown.
Christopher Brown caught four passes for 41 yards, added 32 yards on two punt returns and recorded a kickoff return touchdown. Abu Kamara rushed 18 times for 44 yards and a touchdown and added two receptions for 13 yards. Jason Wheelock completed 14 of 27 passes for 79 yards and a touchdown. Alvin Karriem recorded an interception, three tackles and a 3-yard interception return.
