DeWayne Vaughn was hired as a pitching coach under head coach Mike Jeffcoat at Texas Wesleyan University during the 2011 season.

In his first season, Vaughn helped the pitching staff to 31 wins. The staff led the Red River Athletic Conference in ERA (4.16) and opponent’s batting average (.260). That 4.16 ERA was also the program’s best since 2007 (3.21).

Vaughn brings an extensive knowledge of the game to the Rams. A four-year letter winner at the University of Oklahoma, Vaughn was signed by the New York Mets in 1981. He remained in the Mets’ organization through 1987, progressing to Triple-A. While playing in the Dominican Republic in 1987, Vaughn signed as a free agent with the Texas Rangers.

During spring training of 1988, Vaughn met Mike Jeffcoat. Both pitchers were vying for spots in the Rangers’ bullpen and both made the team. Vaughn pitched one season for the Rangers before his career ended due to injury. He made one comeback attempt with the Baltimore Orioles in 1990, but did not return to the Major Leagues.

Vaughn and Jeffcoat maintained a relationship after the 1988 season. “We believe in the same philosophy,” Vaughn said, “to have these kids play the game right, enjoy playing the game, and get a good education.”

Vaughn is an active member of the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association as well as the Texas Rangers Alumni Association. He has had previous coaching experience with his Oklahoma Prospects select team from 2005-2010. He also served as the University of Oklahoma Baseball color commentator from 2005-2010.

Vaughn completed his degree in business communications at Southern Nazarene University in 2003. He has one son, Derek, and one daughter, Victoria, and currently resides in Arlington.
