Texas Wesleyan University has named Fran Johnson as its new Head Football Coach, ushering in an exciting new era for the Rams football program, as the program enters into its 10 year anniversary in the modern era since being brought back.
Johnson takes the helm after serving as the team's Offensive Coordinator for the past five seasons, where he established himself as one of the driving forces behind the program's success. Known for his innovative offensive approach, player development, and strong leadership, Johnson has helped shape a competitive and explosive Rams offense while building meaningful relationships throughout the program.
A familiar and respected presence within the Texas Wesleyan community, Johnson brings continuity, vision, and a deep understanding of the program's culture and goals. His promotion reflects the university's confidence in his ability to lead the Rams into the future while continuing to build upon the foundation established over the past several years.
As Head Coach, Johnson will continue to call the offense, ensuring consistency in the team's offensive philosophy and maintaining the aggressive, high-energy style that has become a hallmark of Texas Wesleyan football. Additionally, Johnson's leadership helped secure the program's first-ever playoff berth in the modern era in 2024 and a repeat visit to the NAIA Playoffs in 2025.
His strategic focus on complementary football has aligned the offense with the Rams' defense and special teams, contributing to a 41-13 record and Conference Championships in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025.Â
A graduate of Benedictine College in Kansas, Johnson played quarterback for the Ravens from 2001 to 2004, earning degrees in 2005 and 2007
His coaching career began at Benedictine, where he served from 2005 to 2020 before joining the Texas Wesleyan Rams.
Fran resides in Fort Worth with his wife Ashley, and their two sons, Steele and Reign
