Melvin Goins joins Texas Wesleyan University as a first-year assistant coach, bringing a wealth of experience from his playing and coaching careers.
 
Before joining Texas Wesleyan, Goins was a Graduate Assistant at Brigham Young University (BYU) in 2023, contributing to player development and team strategy. His coaching journey also includes stints as an Assistant Coach at Balboa City School during the 2022-23 season and as Head Coach at Second Baptist School in 2019-20, where he demonstrated a solid ability to lead and mentor young athletes.
 
Goins’ playing career is equally impressive. He played professional basketball internationally, representing teams such as KAO Dramas in Greece, Lagos Warriors in Nigeria, Ojinaga Soles in Mexico, and Halifax Hurricanes in Canada. During his college career at the University of Tennessee, Goins made significant contributions to the Volunteers, appearing in 64 games over two years and helping the team secure two NCAA Tournament appearances, including a run to the Elite Eight.
 
Notably, he led the SEC in steals (1.8 per game) during his senior year.
His collegiate accolades include being named the 2009 Foothill Conference Most Valuable Player at Mt. San Jacinto College and earning a spot on the 2008 MAC All-Freshman Team at Ball State University.
 
Goins was also a McDonald’s All-American nominee during his high school career at Christian Life Center Academy in Humble, Texas.
 
Goins holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of Tennessee, which he earned in 2011.
