Angel Martinez, a member of the
Texas Tennis Hall of Fame, is entering his seventh season (2021-22) as head coach of the Texas Wesleyan Tennis program.
Martinez joined the Texas Wesleyan Athletics staff in September of 2014, tasked with restarting the women's tennis program. Two years later, Martinez brought the men's program back as well.
In six seasons, Martinez holds an overall record of 69-47Â (.595) including a record of a record of 53-27Â (.663) with the Lady Rams and 24-20 with the Rams (.545).
Last season (2020-21) Martinez led both teams to outstanding seasons. The Rams put together an undefeated run at 11-0 on their way to a Red River Athletic Conference Championship. Unfortunately, due to a clerical error at the conference office, the Rams were left out of the NAIA National Championship field. Meanwhile the Lady Rams went 7-2 and once again advanced to the Conference finals where they were defeated by LSU-Alexandria.
Â
Prior to joining the Texas Wesleyan coaching staff, Martinez was a Texas high school coaching legend with 31 years of experience. At Grapevine High School he built a state powerhouse and nationally respected program. Prior to taking over at Grapevine in 1999, Martinez worked at Cedar Hill High School for 15 years.
