Coach David Cox is in his first year at Texas Wesleyan University after being the associate head coach at conference rival SAGU. With over three years of experience at SAGU, Coach Cox has showcased his expertise in coaching hurdlers, jumpers, throwers, and combined events while actively involved with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Achievements at SAGU (2023):

Indoors: Led Montrell Blacknall to a school record 4721 and NCCAA National Champion in Heptathlon and a 15th place finish at the NAIA National Championships in the Heptathlon. He coached Charles Pulliam and Nick Henderson to NAIA national qualifying marks in the 60m hurdles and the 60m dash.

Outdoors: At the SAC Championships, his men's events accounted for 97 of the team's 131 points, including three conference champions, eight all-conference performers in six events, and three NAIA national qualifiers. Coached Montrell Blacknall and Ishmael Ealoms to the Sooner Athletic Conference meet Co-MVP, scoring 25 points each. On the women's side, his events accounted for 56 of the team's 72 points, including one conference champion and five all-conference athletes in five events, including Maddie Blanch, the conference champion in the Heptathlon, and hurdlers Nick Henderson (400m hurdles) and Charles Pulliam (110m hurdles) to NAIA national qualifying marks.

Previous Experience:

During his first two years at SAGU, Coach Cox coached walk-on Winston Griffith to a 2X NAIA National Qualifier in the Decathlon in 2021 and 2022 and Heptathlon qualifying marks in 2022. Griffith was also a 2022 NCCAA All-American in the Heptathlon and the Decathlon. Additionally, Coach Cox guided Montrell Blacknall to a 2x NAIA decathlon qualifier, a 1x NAIA Heptathlon qualifier, and an NCCAA All-American.

Before his tenure at SAGU, Coach Cox served as a high school assistant head track coach and football coach at DeSoto High School, Maypearl HS, Red Oak HS, and Waxahachie HS for 28 years. During his tenure, he coached numerous regional and state qualifiers and medalists, including notable athletes like Jalen Reagor in 2017 LJ with a wind-aided season's best of 26'0 and a state championship, and Brandal Lawrence, the 1999 State Champion and All-American in TJ. Coach Cox is a Stephen F. Austin State University graduate, where he was an all-conference performer in track and field. He holds certifications as a USTFCCCA-certified Jumps Coach Specialist and USTFCCCA technical certification.

Coach Cox and his wife Misty reside in Waxahachie and have two grown daughters, Kelsie and Lauren.
