FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team (2-11, 1-4 RRAC) suffered a 2-1 loss in Red River Athletic Conference play against Northwood University (5-7, 2-2) on Thursday.
The Knights struck early when Carlos Villalta scored on a double assist by Stewart White and Dennis Miller in the eighth minute.
The Rams leveled the match in the 20th minute when Ricardo Aguilera knocked the ball ahead to Ivan Kovacevic who found the back of the net. The game remained tied thanks to some quality goalkeeping by Northwood’s David Etale who posted six saves in the period.
Forty-five seconds into the second half TWU’s Joakim Soederbaum made a terrific save on a shot by Gabriel Elizondo, but Stewart White was there to collect the rebound and score the eventual game winner.
The Rams had a good look to tie just two minutes later. T.J. Romaguera got a head on a corner kick from Chase Richeson, but the shot was blocked. With time winding down in the 87th minute Kovacevic took a free kick from 25 yards out, but Etale made another spectacular save to preserve Northwood’s win.
Texas Wesleyan dominated the match statistically. The Rams led 36-11 in shots, 12-5 in shots on goal, and 11-1 in corner kicks.
Etale finished with 11 saves. Soderbaum entered the game with a TWU record 248 career saves and added three more to his total.
The Rams will return to action on Saturday, when they host LSU-Shreveport. That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start at Martin Field.
