Lady Rams Fly By Pilots

Box Score

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer team (9-5, 3-3 RRAC) came back from an early 2-0 deficit against LSU-Shreveport (7-5, 3-2) to snap a three-game losing skid and take a 5-2 win at Martin Field on Saturday.

The Pilots came out hot behind Ashley Pope.  Pope found the net just 3:10 into the game, and then stunned the Lady Rams with a second goal five minutes later.

The Rams put the rough start behind them almost immediately.  Freshman forward Karissa Olson collected a blocked shot and scored in the 12th minute.  Four minutes later, Samantha McGilvra hit Olson for the equalizer.  The Rams got some help in the 32nd minute, when LSUS’s Lacey Hanna was tagged with her second yellow card and the Pilots played on shorthanded.  In the 35th minute Jessica Watton collected a rebound off a Jodi Blowers corner kick and hit the back of the net to lift the Rams to a 3-2 lead.

Olson and Watton put the game away late.  Olson completed her second hat-trick of the season with a goal off an assist from Christina Zimmerman in the 88th minute.  Just 39 seconds later, Watton netted her eleventh goal of the season.

The Rams outshot the Pilots 38-11 and led 8-3 in corner kicks.  Katy Houchin made two saves in the win.  Heather McCutchen made 11 stops in the Pilots’ loss.

Head Coach Josh Gibbs commented on his team’s resiliency.  “This has been a pretty rough stretch for our team.  There were a million reasons for these kids to fold, and they didn’t.  They kept fighting, and I’m really proud of them.  I’m very impressed and honored to coach this team.”

The Lady Rams will play their final regular season home game on Saturday, when they host University of the Southwest.  That game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start.
