Late Goal Lifts Rams over Lions

WAXAHACHIE, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team (4-12, 3-5 RRAC) took a 1-0 win at Southwestern Assemblies of God University (5-11, 0-8) on the strength of a Ricardo Aguilera goal in the 88th minute.
 
The two teams battled to a scoreless draw in the first half. The Rams took a 9-4 edge in shots, but trailed the Lions 5-3 in corner kicks.
 
The Rams controlled the ball to the tune of eight corner kicks in the second half. The game appeared destined for overtime after the Rams missed on two late opportunities. In the 61st minute, Chase Richeson drew a foul in the box, but SAGU goalkeeper Cesar Galvan stopped the ensuing penalty kick. In the 79th minute, Aguilera found himself one vs. one with Galvan, but Galvan was up to the task again.
 
In the 88th minute, Rafael Franco sent a free kick into the box. T.J. Romaguera headed the ball back in front of the goal and Aguilera finished the only goal of the game.
 
For the game, TWU outshot SAGU 22-13 (13-4 on goal) and led 11-7 in corner kicks. Joakim Soederbaum made four saves to preserve the shutout. Galvan made 12 stops for the Lions.
 
The Rams will close out the regular season on Saturday, when they travel to Austin, TX, to take on Huston-Tillotson University. That game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start.
