Rams Tame Lions, 92-69

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s basketball team (7-0, 2-0 RRAC) took a 92-69 win over Southwestern Assemblies of God University (3-3, 1-1) in Red River Athletic Conference Play on Monday.
 
The Rams rode a quick start and a nice finish to the win. In between, SAGU used some timely three’s and very solid free throw shooting to make the game interesting.
 
The Rams appeared to be on their way to a route as a three from Ryan Glanzer capped a 12-2 run to begin the contest. The Rams stretched the lead to 19, 28-9, less than eight minutes in. SAGU buckled down and held the Rams without a field goal for the next five minutes to cut the score to 28-18, and trailed by only 11, 49-38 at the break.
 
The Lions started the second half with five quick points to really make things interesting. Matt Allbritton hit a three to pull the Lions within one at 52-51, and SAGU took the lead with a pair of free throws from Nathaniel Ward. The Rams tied the game at 62 with just under 12 minutes to play on a second-chance layup from Glanzer and regained the lead for good when Glanzer hit two at the line on the following possession. That sparked a 14-2 run that put Texas Wesleyan firmly back in control.
 
Texas Wesleyan kept SAGU off the board in the final 2:35 while running away with the 92-69 win.
 
For the game, the Rams outshot the Lions 50%-35% from the field. SAGU hit 25-of-31 (80.6%) at the free throw line overshadowing a solid night at the line by Texas Wesleyan (21-of-28, 75%). The Rams dominated the glass 49-31 and turned 18 SAGU turnovers into 23 points.
 
Brian Wanamaker led six Rams in double-figure scoring with 21 points. Jeremy Smith added 15 points. Bryce Hill finished with 13 points and seven rebounds. Glanzer posted 12 points, Jeremy Mayfield 11, and Ty Gough10.
 
Ronald Horne led SAGU with 19 points. Ward notched a double-double with 13 points (including 9-of-12 shooting at the line) and 12 rebounds and Craig Grigsby added 13 points.
 
The Rams will return to action on Thursday, when they host Huston-Tillotson University. That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start in the Sid Richardson Center.
