Lady Rams And Lions Battle To Buzzer

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (5-1, 1-1 RRAC) took a heartbreaking 59-56 loss to Southwestern Assemblies of God University (5-3, 2-0 RRAC) on Monday night at the Sid Richardson Center.

 

The Lady Rams struggled to get the ball in the basket early in the first half, but solid offensive rebounds kept Wesleyan in the game. Both teams played well defensively, making for a low scoring first half. Chelsea Jones gave the Lady Lion’s an early 7-4 lead with a three pointer with 15:16 left in the first half. SAGU extended the lead to 12-6, before the Lady Rams charged back to tie it at 12-12 by way of a Brittany White layup with 10:49 left. The two teams fought back-and-forth for the lead throughout the rest of the half. Another Jones three pointer gave the Lady Lions a four-point 25-21 lead with 2:34 left before the break. White answered right back with a shot from behind the arc to bring Wesleyan within one at 25-24 with. Tiffany Adair gave Texas Wesleyan a 28-27 lead with a jumper with thirty seconds left in the half, but a Lady Lion layup with ten seconds left gave SAGU the 29-28 edge at halftime.

 

Texas Wesleyan got off to a good start in the second half with a three pointer from Shayla Moore and a jumper from Nicole Terral to give the Rams a 37-31 lead with14:18 left in the contest. SAGU went on a 10-0 run to grab a 41-37 lead with 10:49 left in the game. Texas Wesleyan chipped away at the deficit and then took a five-point 49-44 lead with 4:37 left in the game. Southwestern had some left in the tank though, pushing through the lane to pick up costly Lady Ram fouls and take a 55-54 lead with under a minute left. Moore gave the Lady Rams a 56-55 lead with a layup with 16 seconds left. SAGU charged down the court and missed a jumper, but the Rams could not secure a rebound and it rolled out of bounds to give the Lady Lions 5.9 seconds to work with. The Lady Lions drew a foul coming out of a timeout to take a 57-56 lead with under two seconds left. The Lady Rams couldn’t convert an inbound play, and SAGU was able to squeak out a very close 59-56 win.

 

Terral led the Lady Rams with a season high 16 points, and four assists. White dropped 13 points and tacked 14 rebounds.  Moore added 11 points, and Octavia Mullins had 10 rebounds in the loss.

 

The Lady Rams barely outshot the Lady Lions, shooting 35.5 percent from the floor and 26.1 percent behind the arc. The Lady Lions only shot 32.7 percent from the floor and 25.0 percent from the three point line. SAGU just edged Texas Wesleyan on rebounds 41-40.  

 

The Lady Rams look to rebound as they play Huston-Tillotson University on Thursday, December 2, at 5:30 p.m. in the Sid Richardson Center.
