Box Score

MARSHALL, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (14-18, 6-4 RRAC) suffered a 3-0 loss in a hard fought match at Wiley College (18-8, 9-4) on Friday.

Costly Texas Wesleyan errors led to a 25-18 win for Wiley in game one.

The Rams found themselves down 17-5 in game two when the team began to click. The Rams ripped off 12 unanswered points to tie the game and eventually took a 21-20 lead on a kill from Kelsey Phillips. The game saw two more ties at 23 and 24 before Wiley took a 26-24 win.

In game three, the Rams trailed 9-3, but battled back to cut the margin to a single point at 16-15. Wiley maintained control and played their first match point at 24-20. The Lady Rams fought off four match points before falling 26-24 in the clinching game.

Texas Wesleyan posted more kills, 40, than Wiley, 38, but errors proved to be costly. The Rams committed 25 hitting errors and seven service errors compared to just 16 and 4 for the Wildcats.

Kristen Venhuizen led the Rams with a match-high 11 kills to go with 12 digs. Evoni Darling also notched a double-double with 31 assists and 14 digs. Katherine Rosenbush added nine kills against just two errors. Marissa Rangel came up with a match-high 16 digs.

“We were putting the ball away today,” commented head coach Christy Clawson, “but we are making too many errors. We fought hard and made good adjustments. If we reduce our errors it is all going to come together.”

The Lady Rams will return to action on Saturday, when they travel to Tyler, TX, to take on Texas College. That match is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
