BROWNWOOD, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer team opened its season with a 4-0 win at Howard Payne University on Saturday.
Although the Lady Rams put four goals on the board, it was their defense that impressed. Texas Wesleyan allowed just one shot (none on goal) in ninety minutes of play.
The offense was slow to start, but goals came in a flurry when they finally broke through. Christina Zimmerman scored the first goal of the season off a feed from Cara Lumpkin in the 40th minute. Just over a minute later, Jessica Watton netted her first of two goals, and Texas Wesleyan led 2-0 at the half.
In the 49th minute Leah Valtman collected a rebound off the HPU keeper and scored. Watton capped the scoring at 4-0 in the 78th minute.
Katy Houchin did not need to make a save while notching her first shutout of the season in goal.
“It took us a little while to settle down and play,” head coach Josh Gibbs commented. “They had a game plan, followed it, and it gave us fits at times. Once we sorted it out we played a much better game. It feels good to get the first win, now we focus on Wayland Baptist on Monday".
The Lady Rams will travel to Plainview, TX, on Monday, to take on Wayland Baptist University. That game is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. kick-off.
