Rams Shutout Warriors

Box Score

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team (2-7, 1-0 RRAC) took a 3-0 win in its Red River Athletic Conference opener against Bacone College (3-6, 0-1) at Martin Field on Thursday.

The Rams came out as the clear aggressor against the Warriors.  Ricardo Aguilera got the scoring started in the 5th minute on an assist from Chase Richeson.  Four minutes later Ivan Kovacevic and Aguilera connected on a spectacular goal.  Kovacevic ripped a bicycle kick at midfield to put Aguilera in on a breakaway and the sophomore finished his second goal of the game.

Joakim Soederbaum made three saves in the first half to keep the Rams on top 2-0 at the break.

Just over two and half minutes into the second half, Bacone’s Derrick Lugano fouled T.J. Romaguera in the box, and Romaguera converted the ensuing penalty kick to bring the score to 3-0.

Texas Wesleyan outshot Bacone 20-14.  The Warriors held a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.  The Rams were whistled for 27 fouls compared to just 10 for the Warriors.

Soderbaum posted six saves in the win, while Tyler Perry stopped five shots in a losing effort.

“We are starting to put it together,” commented head coach Gaspar Martinez, whose team has won two of its last three games.  “I was concerned about how we would handle all those close loses, but the guys have responded well. We know we’ve been in every game and now we are starting to peak at the right time.”

The Rams will continue Red River Athletic Conference play on Saturday, when they host Texas College.  That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start at Martin Field.
