Lady Rams Block Out Bulldogs In Overtime

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team pulled out an 85-79 overtime victory against the Jarvis Christian College Lady Bulldogs at Homecoming on Saturday afternoon at the Sid Richardson Center.

 

Both teams established their presence defensively, which made for a relatively low scoring game throughout the first half. Lady Rams maintained a slight 8-7 advantage early on. Texas Wesleyan got out to a five-point lead at 20-15 with 8:58 left in the half with a pair of free throws from Octavia Mullins. The Lady Bulldogs fought back to bring the score to a 23-22 two minutes later, but the Lady Rams went on a 10-4 run to end the half taking a 33-27 halftime lead.

 

The Lady Rams spent most of the second half trying to keep the Lady Bulldogs at bay. Mullins put in a layup that gave Wesleyan a 41-36 lead. The Lady Bulldogs chipped away at the lead and tied the game at 46 with a layup from Rameitha Buford. Then Jarvis Christian took their first lead with a three pointer from Dinilesizwe Love that gave the Lady Bulldogs a 57-54 lead. The Lady Bulldogs extended the lead to a 65-59 lead with 4:36 left in the game, but the resilient Lady Rams fought back. Texas Wesleyan started attacking the rim and drawing fouls to get to the free throw line. Kristi Alexander made a free throw to bring the Lady Rams within one at 68-67 with 1:32 left in the game. The Lady Rams stepped up on defense and did not allow Jarvis Christian to score in the last 2:20 of regulation. Shayla Moore put in a free throw to tie the game at 68 and send the game into overtime. 

 

It was all Wesleyan in overtime as the Lady Rams showed their defensive dominance, going on a 9-2 run and jumping out to a 77-70 lead. The Lady Bulldogs had to foul to extend the game but the Lady Rams came out on top 85-79.

 

The Lady Rams shot 41.2 percent from the floor, 27.8 percent from behind the arc, and 64.9 percent from the free throw line. Jarvis Christian shot 41.4 percent from the floor, 37.5 from the three point line, and 75.8 percent from the charity line.

 

Mullins led the Lady Rams, picking up a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds in the effort. Brittany White followed with 14 points and nine rebounds. Moore had 14 points and five assists.

 

The Lady Rams will host Texas College on Monday, January 24 at 5:30 p.m. at the Sid Richardson Center.
