FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (18-3, 10-3 RRAC) came back from a sloppy first half to get an 83-69 conference win against Paul Quinn College (3-19, 0-13 RRAC) and their fourth straight win at the Sid Richardson Center Saturday afternoon.
After scoring the first five points of the game, the Lady Rams went flat for most of the first half. The Lady Tigers controlled the tempo of the game, letting Texas Wesleyan play catch up. After losing a 7-2 lead with, Texas Wesleyan trailed by three for most of the half. The Lady Rams finally regained a 32-31 lead late with a triple from Nicole Terral with 4:02 remaining. The Lady Tigers shut the Lady Rams out for the remaining four minutes to secure a 37-32 halftime lead.
Statistically the Lady Tigers out-performed the Lady Rams, shooting a lights-out 62.5 percent from the floor to Wesleyan’s 33.3 percent. Paul Quinn also won the rebound battle in the first half 23-10, while out-scoring the Lady Rams in the paint 20-12.
The roles were reversed in the second half, as Paul Quinn could not keep their momentum going, coming out flat. The only thing similar to the first half is that the Lady Rams scored the first five points off of an Ashley Bringol three and an Octavia Mullins layup to tie the game at 37-37. What was different was that Wesleyan went on a 15-2 run capped by consecutive three’s from Bringol and Terral, shutting down the Lady Tiger offense for over eight minutes of game time. Texas Wesleyan shot 62.1 percent from the floor versus the Lady Tigers 37.9 percent. Texas Wesleyan also hit a 5-of-9 (55.6) percent from behind the arc, while Paul Quinn went 0-7 from the three point line. The Lady Rams held a ten point advantage throughout most of the second half, on their way to an 83-69 win.
The Rams shot 46.2 percent from the floor, 45.0 percent from downtown, and 82.4 percent from the free throw line for the game. The Tigers shot 49.1 percent from the floor, 16.7 percent from the three point line, and 57.7 percent from the charity line for the game. The Lady Rams received tremendous help from the bench as they outscored the Lady Tigers 32-4. Texas Wesleyan also won the points off turnover battle 27-15.
Brittany White led the Lady Rams with 20 points. Tiffany Adair was solid making 5-8 from the floor, 1-1 from behind the arc, and 4-4 from the free throw line to grab 15 points in the win. Mullins notched 13 points behind eight rebounds for the Lady Rams. Terral put up nine points and nine assists in the win.
The Lady Rams travel to Waxahachie, TX and try to get revenge against Southwestern Assemblies of God University on Monday, January 31. Wesleyan took a 59-56 home loss to the Lady Lions in the last meeting. Game time versus SAGU is set for a 5:30 p.m. start.
