FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (12-1, 4-1 RRAC) picked up a win at the hands of conference opponent University of the Southwest Mustangs (3-9, 1-5 RRAC), pushing their win streak to seven games in a 78-37 win at the Sid Richardson Center on Thursday.
Texas Wesleyan took the first points of the game with a layup by
Kristi Alexander and kept the fire on, never giving up the lead. The Lady Mustangs cut the lead to 10-9 with 12:45 left, but the Lady Ram defense tightened up, leading the way to an 18-2 run over an eight minute span that gave Texas Wesleyan a 28-11 lead with 4:34 left in the half. The Lady Rams took a 31-20 lead heading into the break.
Wesleyan got the advantage by points off turnovers, picking up 11 points to the Lady Mustangs 4 points. The Lady Rams also got 10 points from their bench to Southwest’s 3. The Lady Rams shot 40 percent from the field in the first half, 23.1 percent from the three point line, and shot no free throws in the first half. The Lady Mustangs shot 22.2 percent from the field, 22.2 percent from downtown, and 85.7 percent from the charity stripe in the first half.
Texas Wesleyan came out with a bang in the second half and completely dominated the game. The Rams completely shut down the Lady Mustangs, holding USW scoreless for almost five minutes, on their way to a 20-0 run that extended the Wesleyan lead to 52-20 with 15:43 left in the game. The Lady Rams overpowered Southwest, holding the Lady Mustangs to only 17 second half points, six of which came by free throw. The Mustangs went only 5-23 in the second half, and the defensive led Rams picked up a 78-37 win to push their winning streak to seven.
The Lady Rams shot 43.2 percent from the field in the second half, 55.9 percent from behind the arc, and 71.4 percent from the free throw line. University of the Southwest shot 21.7 percent from the field, 11.1 percent from the three point line, and 54.4 percent from the free throw line. Texas Wesleyan dominated points in the paint 18-6, points off turnovers 19-0, second chance points 13-0, fast break points 10-4, and points off the bench 21-2 in the second half.
For the game the Lady Rams shot 41.7 percent from the field, 36.4 percent from behind the arc, and 71.4 percent from the charity stripe. The Lady Mustangs shot 22 percent from the field, 16.7 percent from the three point line, and 66.7 percent from the free throw line for the game.
The Lady Rams continue conference play as they travel to Wiley College on Saturday, January 8. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
