FORT WORTH, TX: The tenth ranked Texas Wesleyan University men’s basketball team (3-0) took a 73-71 win over Lubbock Christian University (3-3) at the Sid Richardson Center on Monday.
The Rams were dealt an early blow when
Eric Frederick picked up his second foul just over three minutes into the game. Frederick went to the bench and only saw the court for eight minutes during the period.
Ronnie Moss was there to pick up the slack however. Moss poured in Texas Wesleyan first 22 points, giving Texas Wesleyan a 22-19 lead with 8:21 on the clock. That lead swelled to 28-21, but the Chaps chipped away and cut the score to 35-33 with a three-pointer from Eddie Oropeza with 2:17 to play. Texas Wesleyan closed the period with a layup from Frederick and two-free throws from Moss to go to the locker room with a 39-33 lead.
Moss scored 28 of the Rams 39 first-half points, going 5-for-6 from three-point range and 9-for-13 from the field.
Midway through the second half, the Chaps got within a point after a Doug Williams three-pointer brought the score to 49-48. The Rams answered with an 8-2 run and later snagged their largest lead of the game at 64-55 with 4:19 remaining.
Texas Wesleyan had the game well in hand at 70-64 with 27 seconds on the clock, but the Chaps made things interesting when a three- from Tyler Kennedy made it a one-possession game, 72-69 with nine seconds to play. Ryan Glanzer iced the contest with one-of-two at the line three seconds later, and a bucket from Rashad Sample at the buzzer was too little too late.
Moss finished the game with an even 40 points to go with six rebounds. He hit 6-of-8 from long range and 11-of-20 from the field. Frederick ended up with eight points and seven rebounds before fouling out after only 18 minutes of playing time.
Chris Angsomwine contributed four points and 11 rebounds to the win.
“We overcame a lot including some massive foul trouble, to stay in the game and made plays to win,” commented head coach Terry Waldrop. Lubbock is a very good, well coached team that played well. I thought you saw Moss’s strength tonight, stepping up with Frederick in foul trouble. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anybody score 22 in a row to start a game. We are a work in progress, but we’ve been able to gut out two wins against solid teams here, and I expect us to be better on Saturday.”
LCU was led by 22 points from Rashad Sample, while Douglas Williams scored 11 and Anthony Brancato finished with 10.
For the game, the Rams outshot the Chaps 40.7%-39.3% from the field and 41.2%-25% from distance. Texas Wesleyan held a 41-31 rebounding advantage and led 17-8 in fast break points. Lubbock Christian had the edge in points off of turnovers, 17-8, and points in the paint, 24-22.
The Rams will turn around and travel to Lubbock, TX, to play the Chaps again on Saturday. That game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start.
