FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (4-1, 1-0 RRAC) made some late jumpers to hold off the upset minded Jarvis Christian College Lady Bulldogs (0-1, 0-1 RRAC) in a 66-63 win at the Sid Richardson Center on Monday.
The Lady Rams and Bulldogs seemingly both came out with the same game plan, play solid defense and force turnovers. Both teams carried out that game plan pretty effectively throughout most of the first half, as neither team held much of a lead. Jarvis forced 15 first half turnovers, while Wesleyan forced 12.
With 4:15 left in the first half, the Lady Bulldogs grabbed a 26-20 lead with an Ebonique Wilson jumper. Texas Wesleyan battled back nibbling at the lead, going on a 9-4 run to come within one point heading into the break, down 30-29.
The Lady Rams came out and flexed their muscles, jumping out to a 44-39 lead with 14:46 remaining in the second half capped by a Raven Smith layup.
The Lady Bulldogs would not go down without a fight and took the lead 59-58 after a two good free throw shots with 4:33 left in the game. The Lady Rams played catch up and tied the game a couple times from their but could not take the lead. With 1:23 left in the game Smith put in a clutch jumper to give the Lady Rams a 64-63 lead. Texas Wesleyan was able to run down the clock and hold on from there with help from a Brittany White jumper to make it a three point game with three seconds left. Jarvis had to put up a half-court shot that fell short as the Lady Rams take the conference opener.
Wesleyan shot 42 percent from the field, and 61 percent from the charity stripe. Jarvis Christian shot 32 percent from the field and 85 percent from the free throw line. The Lady Rams bench out-scored the Bulldgos 29-12. Jarvis had a good day playing off the fast break out-scoring the Rams 18-4 for the game. Wesleyan slightly out-rebounded JCC 44-43.
White led the Lady Rams with 13 points, adding seven rebounds. Octavia Mullins continued controlling the boards with 12 rebounds and putting in nine points. Kayla McCray had a good outing with 10 points, seven boards in the effort.
The Lady Rams will play Paul Quinn College on Wednesday, November 30. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. in the Sid Richardson Center.
