FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (6-2) stayed undefeated at home with an 84-77 overtime win over Southwestern University (4-4) at the Sid Richardson Center Saturday.
Both teams came out in the first half, seemingly playing safer than sorry, each taking their time with the ball, looking for that perfect shot. The Lady Pirates found themselves with a 17-12 lead midway through the first half, but Wesleyan quickly caught up at 19-19 with 9:06 left in the first half with help from an Ashley Bringol three and back to back two’s from Brittany White.
The Lady Pirates battled to keep it close and a Nancy Juarez layup made it a Lady Ram 31-29 lead with 1:35 left in the first. As Southwestern could feel the momentum shifting the Lady Rams put them in check, getting the last six points of the half, all in under a minute of game time. Nicole Terral hit from three and Audrianna Simpson made back to back layups to give Wesleyan a 38-31 halftime lead.
The Lady Rams kept the Lady Pirates at by for most of the second half, stomping out to a 12 point 55-43 lead with 12:14 left in regulation with a white three pointer.
The Lady Pirates did not lay down, going on an 8-0 run to make it 67-63, and tying the ball game at 71-71 with 1:37 remaining in regulation. Kristi Alexander gave the Lady Rams a 74-71 lead with 20 seconds left, but when she missed one of her second free throws, the Lady Pirates got a huge opportunity to take the game. Kayla McCray got called for a rather soft over the back foul, and then McCray was tagged with consecutive technical fouls, sending her out of the game and Southwestern to the line for six free throw shots.
What happened next is more shocking than the consecutive technical calls. Anna Fareed missed the first set of technical free throw, and Valerie Logan and Jordan Owens both went 1 for 2 in their free throw attempts, allowing Wesleyan to hold on to the lead at 74-73.
Mullins got fouled and went 1 for 2 to give the Lady Rams a 75-73 lead with 18 seconds left, and Fareed redeemed herself with a layup to tie the game and sent into overtime.
The Lady Rams defended their home turf, outscoring the Lady Pirates 9-2 in overtime and scoreless from the field, taking an 84-77 win.
The Lady Pirates held the edge in every shooting category, besting the Lady Rams from the field 46 percent to 40 percent, from the three point line 37 percent to 35 percent and from the free throw line 63 percent to 48 percent.
The key for the win has to be the 24 turnovers that the Lady Rams forced the Lady Pirates into, as 25 of Wesleyan’s points were off turnovers.
Mullins was a force for the Lady Rams leading all players in points and rebounds, with 21 and 16 respectively. Alexander and McCray both finished with 12 points, and Brittany White put in 11 points to go with eight boards in the win.
