HAWKINS, TX: The fourth ranked Texas Wesleyan University men’s basketball team (27-2, 20-1 RRAC) clinched a fourth consecutive RRAC regular season championship outright with a 90-72 win at Jarvis Christian College (12-18, 9-12) on Saturday. The title brings with it an automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City, MO, March 16-22.
Texas Wesleyan currently leads LSU-Shreveport by two games in the RRAC standings with just one regular season game to play.
The Rams used an 8-0 run capped by a vicious dunk from Jeremy Mayfield to take a 28-18 advantage midway through the period. A 14-2 run later stretched the lead to 19 at 47-28, and the Rams went on to a 52-37 advantage at the break.
Texas Wesleyan held Jarvis Christian to 36.1% from the field while hitting at a 54.3% clip on their end in the first period. Brian Wanamaker led the effort, going 6-for-7 from the field and posting 19 points in the frame.
The second half was more of the same, as Texas Wesleyan never allowed JCC to get closer than 13 points and led by as many as 22 (82-60) on their way to the 90-72 win.
For the game, the Rams shot 50.8% from the field while holding the Bulldogs to 34.7%. Texas Wesleyan led 52-36 in points in the paint, 24-13 in points off of turnovers, and 22-14 on the fast break.
Wanamaker finished with a game-high 27 points and nine assists. Jeremy Smith added 21 points. Mayfield (20 points, 14 rebounds) and Jonathan Blake (12 points, 10 rebounds) both finished with double-doubles.
The Rams will return to action on Monday, when they travel to Tyler, TX, to take on Texas College. That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start.
