The Lady Rams got out to a red hot start in the first set, taking an 11-4 lead capped by a 9-2 run. Alex Hendee led the charge with four first set kills, her last giving Wesleyan a 24-10 set point lead. Bailey Bunting finished the set with a kill as the Lady Rams took a 25-12 game one win.
The two teams battled in a more even contest in the second set, and the Lady Rams found themselves on the wrong end of a 24-21 score. In danger of evening the match Texas Wesleyan dug themselves out of the deficit led by two key Lynsay Buell kills. The two teams were deadlocked in a 26-26 tie before a Lady Lion attack error and an Elena Vannaman service ace lifted the Lady Rams to a 28-26 win.
The Lady Lions jumped out to an early 7-3 lead led by Kassy Cox in the third set. Texas Wesleyan fought back to tie the game at 10 with a Meghan Finley kill, but SAGU went on a 4-0 run to lead 14-10. The Lady Rams tied the game again at 15 with an Angelica Arroyo service ace, but a few Wesleyan miscues let the Lady Lions back out in front with a 20-16 lead. Wesleyan closed the lead to 21-19, but that was all as SAGU got a set off the Rams 25-19.
The Lady Rams bounced back in the fourth set with a 7-0 run to take a 14-7 lead. That was all the lead Texas Wesleyan needed as they keep the Lady Lions at bay and took a 25-15 fourth set, 3-1 match victory led by five Katherine Rosenbusch kills.
“We played really well tonight”, said head coach Christy Clawson. “It was a good conference win even though we weren’t efficient stopping the strings of runs in the third set. It was huge for us to make a comeback and win the second set like we did. We have a little time off to rest and heal all the minor aches and pains. That should help us and we’ll be ready for St. Thomas.”
Rosenbusch led the Lady Rams with 12 kills, hitting .323, and notched eight block assists and two solo blocks. Stephanie Dominguez picked a double double with 26 assists and 11 digs. Vannaman led the Rams with 15 digs in the win.
The Lady Rams play the University of St. Thomas Lady Celts ten days from now on Friday, September 30, in Houston, TX. Game time scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
