Rams Hold Off Tigers

Box Score

DALLAS, TX:  The thirteenth ranked Texas Wesleyan University men’s basketball team (20-4, 15-3 RRAC) took a 72-65 win at Paul Quinn College (7-18, 6-13) in Red River Athletic Conference action on Saturday.

With the win, the Rams reached two milestones.  Texas Wesleyan has now reached the 20-win plateau in five consecutive seasons.  Meanwhile senior forward Ryan Glanzer tied the school record with his 103rd win, matching the mark set by Cody Waldrop last season.

Playing in the first of three contests without the services of the nation’s fourth leading scorer, Ronnie Moss, the Rams found themselves in a battle throughout the first half.

After an early three from Oscar Griffinleft the Rams with an 11-4 lead, the Tigers stormed back with a 10-1 run and later opened a 27-20 advantage.  Four straight fast break points and another triple from Griffin highlighted a 12-4 run that put the Rams back on top at 31-30 with just under three minutes to play.  The game reached its seventh tie score at 34-34, but the Rams closed the first half with a pair of free throws from Eric Frederick to lead 36-34 at the break.

The Rams imposed their will from the start of the second half, beginning the period with nine unanswered points.  Although, the Rams were unable to pull away, they managed to keep the Tigers at arm’s length for the remainder of the contest.

The Rams outshot the Tigers 45%-35% from the field and held a 37-33 advantage on the board.  Paul Quinn stayed in the game with outstanding free throw shooting, hitting 89% (25-28) at the charity stripe.  Conversly the Rams were unable to help themselves at the line, hitting only 20-of-33 (60%).

Four Rams reached double-figures in scoring.  Frederick turned in his fifth consecutive double-double and 12th on the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds.  Griffin added 18 points and seven boards.  Brian Talley finished with 14 points, and Jazz Holman filled the stat sheet to the tune of 10 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and four steals.

Paul Quinn’s Aaron McCuin hit 16-of-18 free throws on his way to a game-high 24 points while grabbing 18 rebounds.  Dwayne Rogers and Reginald Hill each finished with 10 points in the loss

“It’s a different team when you’re missing a kid who averages 23,” commented head coach Terry Waldrop.  “but I thought everybody really stepped up.  Jazz Holman filled in nicely.  Brian Talley played well, and we got some good play from the bench on our way to a good win on the road.  We’re one game back with six to go and we’ll see what happens.”

The Rams will return to action on Thursday when they travel to Marshall, TX, to take on Wiley College.  That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start.
