BROWNSVILLE, TX: A 13-inning 3:42 opener made for a long night in Brownsville as the Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (9-3, 3-2 RRAC) was swept in a doubleheader at UT-Brownsville (10-5, 5-0) on Saturday.
Game one featured great pitching and a controversial finish.
The Rams jumped on the Scorpions early. In the first inning,
Christian Soberanes was hit by a pitch and
Alex Padilla singled to put runners at the corners with two outs.
Vincent Winter, courtesy running for Padilla, ran the rabbit play and stayed in a rundown between first and second long enough for Soberanes to scamper home with the game’s first run.
The following inning,
Jordan Fuller struckout but reached on a dropped third strike. A double from
Joseph Lassiter pushed Fuller to third, and a groundout from
Justin Barnes pushed the score to 2-0.
The Scorpions turned two two-out walks into a three-run rally in the fourth with a two-run single from Gus Hengeler and an RBI knock from Joel Fernandez.
Game one was scheduled for seven innings, but the Rams loaded the bases with two outs and, down to their last strike,
Taylor Jockers scored the tying run on a wild pitch.
Patrick Stanley came on in relief of
Derek Vaughn in the bottom of the seventh and kept the Scorpions of the board. That extended the game to a nine inning affair with game two becoming a seven inning game.
Stanley and UTB’s Kale Wierenga held both offenses in check into the twelfth inning. In the bottom of the thirteenth, still tied at three, the Scorpions drew three straight walks to load the bases with one out. Hengeler then laid down a bunt and the Rams’ throw home appeared to be in time for a force play. The umpire appeared to look for a tag to be applied and called Kyle Douglas safe with the winning run. This created a bizarre scene as head coach Mike Jeffcoat asked the umpires to confer. The Rams remained on the field as the Scorpions began to prepare the field for game two. After an extended conference between the two umpires, the call at the plate stood and UTB came away with a 4-3 win.
Stanley tossed five innings of scoreless relief for the Rams.
Blake Ballard (0-1) took the loss after allowing a run on one hit and three walks in 1.1 innings of work. Baylr Bickerton (1-0) earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief work.
Padilla reached base on five of six trips to the plate, going 2-for-3 with two walks and his only out coming on a batter’s interference call. Soberanes added a 2-for-5 day as well.
Game two was an odd contest in which the Rams were cited for seven errors, neither team could muster an earned run, and the contest was completed in less than half the time of game one (1:50). Texas Wesleyan errors in the first, third, and sixth innings led to four UTB runs. The Rams plated one run in the fifth inning. After Winter advanced to second on a passed ball,
Jake Howeth brought him in with an RBI single.
Brian White collected two of Texas Wesleyan’s five hits in game two.
The Rams and Scorpions will complete their three-game series on Sunday. The finale is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
