FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (7-5) handled Mid-America Christian University (7-3) in three sets (25-15, 25-16, 25-23) at the Sid Richardson Center on Thursday night.
The Lady Rams did a good job of getting ahead of the Lady Evangels early, keeping a lead throughout the first set.
Wesleyan went on a 10-1 run capped by an Alex Hendee kill from Angelica Arroyo to take a 17-6 lead before taking the set 25-15.
The Lady Evangels took a slight 8-7 lead with a kill by Calle Solie in the second set, but the Lady Rams took control. Texas Wesleyan took a 9-3 run to put away the second set 25-16.
The Lady Rams looked poised to take an easy third set, bouncing out to a 10-2 lead to start.
The Lady Evangels took advantage of head coach Christy Clawson putting in her younger core to get some work in, going on a 9-0 run to cut the lead to a 14-13 Ram lead. Texas Wesleyan held their ground, patiently dealing with miscues, not getting out of their game plan. Katherine Rosenbusch gave the Lady Rams a couple of big kills to keep them in front to finish off the Lady Evangel in three sets with a 25-23 win.
“We played consistently tonight”, Clawson said, “We did a good job of keeping them out of their comfort zone and under pressure throughout the night. It was good to get some of our younger girls some work, and when they were struggling a little bit in the third set, our veterans kept their heads up and we got out of it.”
Rosenbusch led the Rams with nine kills, while tallying an ace and a pair of digs. Meghan Finley posted seven kills and three blocks. Hendee had seven kills and six digs in the win. Arroyo put up 24 assists, and Lauren Hutchinson led all players with 15 digs.
The Lady Rams travel to Siloam Springs, AR to play a tri-match with College of the Ozarks and John Brown University on Monday, September 10. Wesleyan will play College of the Ozarks at 3:00 p.m., and John Brown at 5:00 p.m.
