MUSKOGEE, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s basketball team (11-5, 6-4 RRAC) won a 66-63 battle against Bacone College (1-11, 0-7 RRAC) in overtime on Monday.
It was a tight first half throughout, as Bacone took an early 8-5 lead before Dallas Jones hit a three to tie the game.
Neither team led by more the four points in the contest, as the Warriors tried to hold on to the lead. The Rams put a few good possessions together and Teance Walton hit a jumper to tie the game at 29-29 at the break.
The Warriors held their biggest lead of the night with 14:27 left in regulation at 37-31 with an Alex Stanley field goal. The Rams charged back, retaking the lead with a Kyle Preston splash from downtown at 49-49. Preston then gave the Rams their largest lead of the night with another basket from behind the arc with 4:40 remaining, completing a 10-0 run to make it a 56-49 game.
The Warriors made a run of their own with seven straight points to tie the game at 56-56 and send the game into overtime.
Jones hit a three in overtime to give the Rams a 61-58 lead, and held off the upset minded Warriors for the 66-63 win.
Texas Wesleyan did a good job of responding every time Bacone put the Rams under pressure.
The Rams shot 32.7 percent from the field, 27.3 percent from downtown, and 75.0 percent from the free throw line. The Warriors shot 34.3 from the field, 18.2 percent from the three point line, and only 45.8 from the charity stripe.
Walton led the Rams earning a double double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Jones put up 14 points and seven boards in the win. Brian Werner had eight points to go with four rebounds.
The Rams will play Wiley College on Saturday, January 14 at 4:00 pm in the Sid Richardson Center.
