SHAWNEE, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (19-18) took a 3-1 (25-19, 17-25, 25-13, 25-20) win from Southwestern Assemblies of God University (15-16) before falling in a 3-1 (20-25, 25-19, 25-14, 25-19) match to Wayland Baptist University (30-5) in the 2013 Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday.

The Lady Rams, who evened the season series against SAGU at home on senior day with a 3-1 win, were able to take another 3-1 win over the Lady Lions in the first match of the 2013 SAC Tournament.

Wesleyan took a 10-5 lead to start the first set capped by a Lauren Hutchinson service ace. The Rams later extended the lead 19-12 on another ace, this time from Stephanie Dominguez. A Katherine Rosenbusch kill made it a 23-15 game before SAGO went on a 4-0 run to tighten the lead at 23-19, but two Lady Lion errors gave TWU the first set 25-19.

SAGU came right back in second set, jumping out to a 7-3 lead with a Kassy Cox kill. The Lady Lions would extend the lead with help from a 6-0 rally capped by a Ram error for a ten-point lead at 20-10. SAGU held off the Lady Rams to take the second set 25-17.

Texas Wesleyan played from behind but close to start the third set, eventually tying the set 6-6 with a Rosenbusch kill. That was all part of a7-1 run that gave the Rams an 11-7 lead capped by a Courtney Shirey kill. The Lady Lions outscored the Lady Rams7-3 from there, and tied the game at 14 apiece on a Jessica Sodich kill. SAGU held a small lead before Abigail ZIpoy tied the set again at 18-18 with a kill. The set was tied four more times as both teams battled for the important third set win. A Lady Lion error gave Wesleyan advantage, and Alex Hendee sealed the set 25-13 with a clutch ace to put the Lady Rams up 2-1 in the match. The third set was tied 14 times, with neither team enjoying more than a four point lead.

After Wesleyan took a 3-0 lead to start the fourth set, the Lady Lions came back to tie the set at 4-4 with a JJ Abbott, Kassy Cox block. The Lady Rams kept a slight lead on the Lions, staying consistent and limiting the mistakes, using a 5-0 run capped by back to back kills from Meghan Finley and Zipoy to make it a five-point game at 15-10. A Beka Dollar ace brought SAGU back within two at 19-17, and an Abbott kill made a one-point, 21-20 deficit for the Lady Lions. SAGU threatened, but back to back kills by Finley secured the 25-20 set, 3-1 match win.

Hendee led the Rams with 14 kills. Zipoy had nine kills and 10 digs. Hutchinson added 25 digs. Dominguez notched 20 assists, while Lauren Hamaker had 18 assists in the win.

 Fueled by their win over SAGU, the Lady Rams slammed on the pedal to take a 4-0 lead on a Dominguez ace, continuing the dominating effort for a 7-2 lead in the first set. Wesleyan kept the pressure on to grab a 10-point, 15-5 lead. The Pioneers used a 9-3 run to cut the lead to 18-14. A Ram error made it a 21-19 Wesleyan lead, but the Lady Rams got back on track with a 4-1 rally capped by a Hendee kill to take a 25-20 set win.

The Pioneers gained some momentum and too the Lady Rams seriously in the second set, grabbing a 9-4 lead topped by a Claire Jacobsma kill. Â The lead was cut to 15-14 as the Lady Rams forced some errors, but Wayland was able to keep a slight lead late in the set. A Zipoy kill got the Lady Rams close, but a 4-0 Pioneer run tied the match with a 25-19 second set.

The Lady Rams could not get anything going in the third set, as Wayland kept Wesleyan on their heels the entire match. Four Ram errors in the first six points gave the Pioneers a 5-1 lead. That quickly turned into a 15-5 lead for WBU. The Lady Rams only hit .059 (11-9-34), compared to the Pioneers, who hit .563 (10-1-16) making all the difference. Wesleyan dropped the third set 25-14.

The Rams and Pioneers battled in fourth set, neither team enjoying more than a two point lead to start. A Rosenbusch kill tied the game at 10-10, but Wayland Baptist promptly got back out to a 13-10 lead. The Pioneers extended the lead with a 7-3 run to make it a 17-13 game. Texas Wesleyan used a small 5-2 spark to get within one point at 19-18 capped by a Zipoy kill. A 5-1 run by the Pioneers was enough to take a 25-19 set, 3-1 match win.

Hendee notched a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs. Zipoy led the Rams with 14 kills. Finley tallied 12 kills in the effort. Dominguez notched 29 assists for the Lady Rams.

Wayland Baptist will take on the winner of Oklahoma City and Oklahoma Baptist in the championship game tomorrow.
