VB: Rams Fall Short in NAIA Opening Round

MCPHERSON, Kan. — Texas Wesleyan University (25-8, 20-2) fell to McPherson College (32-2, 13-0) in straight sets, with final scores of 25-22, 25-13, 25-17, in a postseason matchup at Holman Fieldhouse. Despite the loss, Texas Wesleyan recorded 29 kills and 9 total blocks, while McPherson's efficient attack was highlighted by a .462 hitting percentage in the second set.

Texas Wesleyan initiated the first set with strong serving, as Ruby Rumohr delivered two service aces, contributing to an early 3-0 lead over McPherson. Sydney Alexander and Victoria Smith capitalized on this momentum with key kills, helping maintain a narrow advantage. Despite a mid-set challenge from McPherson, which included several blocks and a brief lead, the Rams remained competitive.Alexander continued to be an offensive presence, aided by Rumohr's assists, as Texas Wesleyan reduced the deficit to 15-14. Although McPherson managed to pull ahead with a series of service aces and blocks, Texas Wesleyan fought back with a late surge, highlighted by critical blocks from Lyric Biggiers and Loes Peijnenburg. The second set began with McPherson quickly gaining momentum, building an early lead over Texas Wesleyan. The Rams attempted to counter with kills from Hanna Rubis and Peijnenburg, but McPherson's defense held firm, particularly with blocks that stifled their offense. Despite a timeout and brief rallies, Texas Wesleyan struggled to close the gap, as McPherson maintained control with effective serves and timely kills. The set concluded with McPherson extending their advantage, closing out the set 25-13.

Texas Wesleyan opened the third set with a kill from Alexander, leveling the score at 1-1. Alexander continued to boost the offense with multiple kills and an ace, helping the Rams to a 4-2 lead. Biggiers and Peijnenburg contributed to extending the advantage to 8-5 with key plays, including a block and a service ace. Midway through the set, McPherson responded with a series of points, tying the score at 12-12. Despite a timeout, the Rams struggled with attack errors, allowing McPherson to build a lead. Madison Grekstas and Biggiers attempted to close the gap with successful kills, but McPherson managed to maintain their momentum. As the set concluded, the Rams faced continued pressure from McPherson's offense. Despite efforts from Grekstas and Biggiers to keep the score close, McPherson capitalized on errors to secure a 25-17 victory in the third set.

Alexander finished with seven kills, one ace, and seven digs, contributing significantly to the team's efforts. Grekstas recorded a perfect attack percentage with two kills on two attempts. Rumohr posted 14 assists and added two service aces. Biggiers led in scoring with seven kills and three total blocks, providing a balanced performance across the net.

The Rams season concludes with the loss as they look to return to the National Tournament next year.
