HOUSTON, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball team (3-3) suffered a 50-49 loss at the hands of the University of St. Thomas Houston (3-1) at UST's PSN Sports Challenge on Friday.
The first half was very tight, with the Celts enjoying the largest lead of the period at 21-17 with 1:42 to play. A pair of free throws from
Takoia Larry and a layup from
Krissy Parker tied the game at 21, but UTS's Gaby Guzman closed the half with a bucket to bring the score to 23-21 favoring the Celts.
The second half was a similar affair. The Rams took a 27-26 lead with a basket from
Kashay Barnes. The lead changed hands two more times before a
Liz Handy three pointer gave Texas Wesleyan its largest lead of the game at 49-42. Unfortunately, the Rams would not score in the remaining 4:18.
The Celts chipped away in the final minutes and took a 50-49 lead on a pair of free throws from Chelsea Davis with 19 seconds to play. Texas Wesleyan could not execute an inbound play and UST was then able to run out the clock and escape with the one-point win.
Both teams shot 32% from the field, but the Rams hit just 1-of-10 three-point attempts. Texas Wesleyan won the battle-of-the-boards 44-37, and both squads committed 18 turnovers.
With just 99 points combined, the game was easily the lowest scoring contest of the year for Texas Wesleyan. No lady Rams reached double-figures in scoring. Larry finished with eight points and 10 rebounds. Parker and
ToiEasha Cooper each had nine points in the loss.
Kayla McCray went 3-for-4 from the field and finished with eight points and five boards.
Maghen Lormand led UST with 21 points and nine rebounds.
The Rams will continue action at the PSN Sports Challenge on Saturday, when they take on the University of the Incarnate Word. That game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start.
