SAN ANTONIO, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men's basketball team (5-2) bounced back with a 78-62 win over the University of St. Thomas Houston (2-5) at Our Lady of the Lake University's Halo Classic on Saturday.
The win snapped a two-game losing skid against the Celts and put the Rams back on top in the all-time series, 5-4.
The Rams continued to shoot the ball well and limited their turnovers against UST. The first half rolled through eight ties and 13 lead changes before the Rams ripped off eight unanswered points to take control at 39-31.
Dallas Jones later beat the first half horn with a three-pointer to send the Rams to the locker room up 42-35.
The Rams led throughout the second half; however, the contest remained tight until
Eli Alexander and
Kenny Rhymes connected on back-to-back three pointers to push the advantage to 70-59 with 1:55 to play. Texas Wesleyan scored the last five points of the game to pull away for the 78-62 win.
For the game, the Rams outshot the Celts 46%-42% from the field and 55%-21% from long range. The Rams also hit a remarkable 20-of-22 (90.9%) from the free throw line, while the Celts were a paltry 9-of-14 (64.3%). Texas Wesleyan led 35-25 in rebounds and limited their turnovers to 14, while forcing UST into 11 miscues.
Six Rams reached double-figures in scoring, led by Rhymes and
Jorge Redmon who each finished with 15.
Dallas Jones added 14.
Deonte Jones scored 11, and
Rilwan Bakare and Alexander each scored 10.
UST was led by Deric Dudley's 26 points.
The Rams will return to action Thanksgiving weekend when they host the Clifford Classic which pits their new conference, the Sooner Athletic Conference, against their old Conference, the Red River Athletic Conference. Oklahoma Baptist and LSU-Shreveport, both ranked 2nd in the NAIA Preseason Coaches' Poll, will kick off the action at the Sid Richardson Center at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Texas Wesleyan will follow with a game against Jarvis Christian College at 7:30 p.m.
