Lady Rams Fall to Lady Wildcats, 87-71



MARSHALL, Texas – The Texas Wesleyan women’s basketball team had their seven-game winning streak snapped as they fell to Wiley College (22-3, 16-2 RRAC), 87-71 in a conference road contest on Saturday afternoon. Takoia Larry led the Lady Rams (19-8, 14-6 RRAC) in scoring with 19 points. Larry was one rebound shy of posting her second double-double of the season with nine rebounds.
 
“Wiley showed today why they lead the conference and are nationally ranked,” said head coach Bill Franey. “We were outplayed and outcoached. They deserve credit for a well-played game.”
 
The Lady Wildcats held their largest lead of the first half, ahead by 19 points, at 35-16 with 5:35 remaining before the half. The Lady Rams forced a 6-0 run to shorten the deficit to 13 with .32 seconds remaining on the clock. After Danisha Shaw sunk two free-throws for the Lady Wildcats, Andrea Davis hit a jumper to pull Texas Wesleyan back within 13 to enter the half at 37-24. Davis came away with 10 points, three assists, and two rebounds.
 
The Lady Rams came out red hot after the break, and started the second half by going on a 7-0 run in the opening minute to make it a 6-point game at 37-31 at the 19:03 mark. The Lady Wildcats extended the lead back into double-digits, and after a three-pointer from Kayla Brown, the Lady Wildcats were ahead by 14 at 56-42.
 
The Lady Rams showed their resiliency and answered back by going on a 10-0 run. Toieasha Cooper came away with a steal which led to a layup by Larry to pull the Lady Rams within four at 56-52 with 10:42 remaining. Cooper tallied up 11 points, seven rebounds, and three steals.
 
Wiley eventually extended the lead back into double-digits, where it stayed for the remainder of play.
 
The Lady Rams were unable to hit from beyond the arc for the first time this season, shooting 0-7 from the three-point line.
 
Carneisha Sims posted a double-digit scoring effort with 13 points. Sims also grabbed five rebounds in the game.
 
The Lady Rams will take on LSU-Shreveport (19-4, 14-3 RRAC) on Monday, February 18th in Shreveport, Louisiana. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
