Box Score STEPHENVILLE, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (6-7) take a hard fought 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-16) loss to NCAA Division II Tarleton State University (3-2) at Wisdom Gym on Tuesday night.
The Rams jumped out to a 7-3 lead to start things off in the first set on a 5-0 run capped by the consecutive service aces from
Lauren Hutchinson. Wesleyan immediately went on a 5-0 run to make it a 12-5 lead. A
Courtney Shirey kill kept the Wesleyan lead at 20-15, but the TexAnns made a furious comeback to cut the lead to 23-22 with a kill from Stacie Murrah.
Alex Hendee kept the Rams on track with the last two points to take a 25-23 first set win. Starnisha Bodie led the Rams with five kills.
The Texanns spurred a 6-0 run to take 10-4 lead to start the second set, but the Lady Rams took a 5-0 run that started with a
Katherine Rosenbuschkill and capped by a Rosenbusch,
Stephanie Dominguez, and Shirey block to cut the lead within one at 10-9. Wesleyan played from behind from there, but tied the game at 18-18, and scored three points with while Tarleton had set point to get within one at 24-23, but the Texanns ended up taking the second set 25-23 to even the match.
Tarleton State continued to improve their hitting percentage in the third set, minimizing the errors taking a 19-13 lead as Meg Umbel and Murrah both reach over 10 kills each for the match in the third set. The Texanns use the home court advantage to take the 25-18 third set win.
The Texanns had all the momentum heading into the fourth set, and it showed as Tarleton State went on a 4-0 to start the set, and made multiple short runs to take a 25-16 fourth set, 3-1 match win.
Bodie led Wesleyan with 11 kills and only one error for a .357 hitting percentage, with two blocks in a career night. Rosenbusch tallied 10 kills, two aces and a block. Hutchinson had 15 digs and three aces in the match. Dominguez notched 37 assists and nine digs for the Lady Rams.
Texas Wesleyan will travel to Oletha, KS for the Mid-America Nazarene Tournament Friday and Saturday, September 13-14. The Lady Rams will play Benedictine University at 11:00 am and Grand View University at 3:00 pm on Friday, before taking on Evangel University at 12:00 pm and Northwestern College at 2:00 pm on Saturday.
