Box Score
FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball team (9-8, 5-4 SAC) had five players score in double digits, taking a 69-56 win over Southwestern Christian (OK) (6-12, 4-6 SAC) at the Sid Richardson Center on Saturday.
After Krissy Parker tied the game at 4 apiece early in the game, the Lady Eagles went on a 10-3 rally capped by a Vanessa Bledsoe layup to grab a 14-7 lead. Wesleyan cut into that lead with a short 5-0 burst to trail 17-14 with eight minutes left in the half. The Eagles, determined to stay in control, pulled out to a 10-point, 30-20, advantage on a Maranda Janz bucket from downtown. The Lady Rams dug in and all but shut Southwestern Christian down from there. Texas Wesleyan gave up only one point in the last four minutes of the half, while torching the Eagles on a 12-1 run capped by an Onyesonam Nolisa lay-in at the buzzer to take a 32-31 lead.
After giving up the lead on another Janz three pointer to start the second half, the Lady Rams fought to regain it on a Parker jumper in the paint. Kayla McCray gave Wesleyan a five point advantage on a turnaround put back with 15:30 left in the contest. The Lady Rams kept a modest lead on the Eagles until Kim Hayes drained a jumper beyond the arc to tie the game at 44-44 midway through the second half. Liz Handy came right back, splashing in a three pointer to make it 47-44. It was raining three pointers as a Janz trey tied the game again at 51-51 with seven minutes on the clock. Hayes secured a 53-51 lead for the Eagles on a jumper with five and change remaining in the game, but Nolisa bested that effort putting in a shot from downtown, taking the wind out of the Lady Eagle feathers. Southwestern Christian played the foul game from there to catch up, but no luck as the Lady Rams topped the night off with a 69-56 win.
The Eagles shot 30 percent from the field, while Wesleyan shot 48 percent. The Rams outscored their opponent 40-16 in the paint and 29-5 off the bench. TWU had 10 blocks as a team on the night.
Nolisa went 5-10 from the field with two three pointers for 13 points, four boards, three assists, and two steals in her Texas Wesleyan debut. Amy Moody was a rebound and an assist away from a triple-double, posting 10 points, nine boards, and nine assists. ToiEasha Cooper notched 11 points and eight rebounds in the effort. McCray had 13 points and eight rebounds in the win.
The Lady Rams will travel to Shawnee, OK to make up a game with Oklahoma Baptist on Monday, January 27. Tip-off is set for a 6:00 pm start.
