FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men's soccer team (5-5-2, 3-2 SAC) took an impressive 2-1 win over 13th ranked University of Science & Arts (OK) (10-2, 3-1 SAC) in Sooner Athletic Conference action at Martin Field on Friday.
The Drovers possessed the ball well and held a 23-7 edge in shots and 14-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities. However, they did not make the most of those opportunities. The shot on goal count was just 6-4. Goalkeeper
Arturo Sanchez also made five saves in goal to keep the Drovers at bay.
The Rams took advantage of their opportunities. In the 38th minute
Brien Avalos settled the ball at midfield and played a great ball ahead to
Drake Trease who finished his fourth goal of the season.
The Rams nursed that 1-0 lead into the second half, but USAO finally broke through in the 67th minute when Niall Burley took a free kick from the far right wing that found Kolokwera Okot's head in front of the goal.
The Drovers kept the pressure up for the remainder of the contest, but in the 81st minute Avalos played a corner kick to the back post and
Cody Marlow was there to score the game-winner.
The Drovers pressed in the final minutes, but only got two shot attempts which were both blocked by the Texas Wesleyan defense.
Sanchez (3-4-2) made five saves in the win. Bryan Byars made two saves in the loss.
The Rams will return to action on Tuesday, when they host Wayland Baptist University. That game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start at Martin Field.
