Lady Rams Hold Off Late Push, Gibbs Earns 100th

TEXARKANA, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women's soccer team (6-2) held off a scrappy, upset minded Texas A&M University-Texarkana (6-3-2) with a 3-2 win at Hawks Stadium on Saturday.

The newly founded Eagle soccer program is playing their home games at Pleasant Grove High School, while their soccer facilities are being built. The Eagles came into the game on a 5-0-2 streak, with a 10-0 win over Williams Baptist, while holding UT-Brownsville to a 2-2 draw in that span.

The Lady Rams and Eagles played hard out of the gate in the first half, with Texas Wesleyan taking the first shot, leading to a corner. The A&M Texarkana defense held strong until Kaitlin Bush punched in a goal at the 17:33 mark to give the Rams an early lead.

TAMUT got off a few good looks in the remaining minutes, but the Texas Wesleyan defense was able to handle the offensive attack to take a 1-0 lead at half time.

The Lady Rams started the second half strong, starting with a Kailene Allis goal on a fantastic through ball from Bush at the 55:56 mark.  Wesleyan took a commanding lead in the 61st minute when Shrareh Asadi knocked in a goal on another Bush assist for a 3-0 lead.

The Eagles hit a second wind after that and proved to be a formidable opponent for the rest of the match. Sam Sharpnack-Isom hit Natalie Sevilla in stride for a goal to make it 3-1 match in the 72nd minute. Five minutes later in the 77th minute, Sharpnack-Isom was able to slip past the back line and put a ball in net to bring the score to 3-2. The Lady Rams got back on track though, playing solid defense to close the match with a 3-2 win.

Bush led the Lady Rams with a goal and a pair of assists. Allis and Asadi each notch a goal in the win. Nikki Lockwood (6-2) tallied her sixth win with three saves.

With the win, head coach Josh Gibbs picks up win number 100. His record improves to 100-50-8 (.633) through eight seasons and eight games.

The Lady Rams will be back in action on Saturday, October 11 with a conference match with Southwestern Christian University. That match set for a 2:00 pm start in Bethany, OK.
