Lady Rams Rally on Senior Day

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (13-17, 9-5 SAC) nabbed a 3-0 (25-17, 27-25, 25-17) senior day win over Southwestern Christian University (10-20, 1-13 SAC) at the Sid Richardson Center on Saturday.

The Lady Rams got off to a rocky start in the last home game of the season, allowing the Eagles to hold a 6-3 lead to start the match, errors being the main culprit. Texas Wesleyan went on a 5-1 run capped by a Shelby Stinnett kill to gain an 8-7 lead.  The Lady Rams slowly worked their way out to a 19-15 lead, part of a 9-5 run capped by an Alex Hendee kill. Wesleyan ended the set on a 5-0 run highlighted by an Abigail Zipoy kill, to win 25-17.

The Eagles again took advantage of a few Ram mishaps to start the second set. Wesleyan trailed 8-3, and Southwestern Christian played well enough to keep a slight advantage late into the set. The Lady Rams cut the lead to 14-13 on three consecutive kills from Lynsay Buell and Hendee, but three consecutive errors followed that to give the Eagles a 17-13 cushion. Those errors were the beginning of a 5-0 Eagle rally capped by a Courtney Traylor kill to make it a 19-15 lead. Texas Wesleyan came charging back on a 6-1 run capped by a Meghan Finley kill to tie the game at 20-20. The two teams took turns holding set point before a Zipoy kill and a Shughnessy Hearn service completed the comeback for the Lady Rams, taking the second set 27 25.

The third set was a tighter affair at the start, as the game was tied 7-7 before a 4-0 Ram rally capped by a Lauren Hamaker ace made it 11-7.  Another 5-0 run later in the set capped on a Stinnett kill extended the lead to an eight-point, 20-12 margin. Southwestern Christian cut the lead to 20-16 after that, but the Lady Rams shut the door with a Hendee kill and a Hamaker ace to finish the match with a 25-17 win.

Zipoy led all players with 13 kills, and had 10 digs in the win. Hamaker led all players with 24 assists. Hendee notched nine kills in the win. Finley and Buell each had six kills. Upshaw notched five digs in the match.

The four seniors that were honored in their last home game have been instrumental in the success of the Texas Wesleyan University volleyball program. These players have helped tally 80 wins during their tenure, while maintaining a .500 or better conference win percentage in each year since 2010. Upshaw, a 5-6 outside hitter from Burton, TX, Hamaker, a 5-10 setter from Cedar Park, TX, Buell, a 5-10 middle blocker from Ponder, TX, Hendee, a 5-10 outside hitter from Round Rock, TX, and Finley, a 6-1 middle blocker out of Tuscon, AZ will all be missed for their dedication, hard work, and contributions as Lady Rams.

The Lady Rams will travel to Siloam Springs, AR for a conference match with John Brown University on Friday, November 7. First serve is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
